Do you mean the axle is wiggling around and you've tightened the four allen bolts on the swing arm? Those allen bolts control the movement of the bearing carrier - not the actual axle.

you can grab the wheel and move the axle up and down

Is the carrier turning, causing the chain to loosen? If so remove it and clean out all the gunk and replace.

If the axle is loose within the carrier, the bearings will most likely need replacing. There is a thread in the FAQ forum that describes how to do this.

Sounds like the bearings.

yep - sounds like your bearings are hosed. To be sure - watch the end of the carrier right by the sprocket hub while wiggling the axle. If you see the axle move but not the carrier - which I think you will, it's you bearings. You can either just by new bearings and seals and redo your carrier - or get a new aftermarket carrier that will come with the bearings already in it. Either way you will need to take the whole thing apart and buy a locknut like the RAD to replace the two nut stock setup. Once the stock setup has been taken apart - it will not hold, even with locktight. The bearing and seals are about $50 I think and the locknut is about $45.

About how long before your first set of bearings will need replacing?

1 year, 2 years. (yes, I know it depends on how much you ride, but what seems to be the average?)

I'm 99% sure you don't need to replace anything else. But if the bearings have some time on them, it might be a good idea to replace them while everything is apart.

Ebay seems to be the place to get an aftermarket carrier for the best price, including 'name brand' ones. Just watch the shipping charges.
