i have a 400 and it will not stop ticking
i have tried to adjust the valves endless times
but it always sounds the same
every time i ride it hard it gets worse and worse
i was told it might be a stretched timing chain.
any info would be great
oh by the way i have a 425 kit and a tc low end cam

i would say the valves..but it could be the chain..when u adjust your valves start a lil big and work your way down until it sounds the best..take the head off and check out the timing chain

You might check the timing chain tenstioner also. it could be faulty

sometimes it is the timing chain that stretches. i hear that if your idle is too low it will also make noise. also, when i adjusted my valves the first few times, i adjusted them too loose. i read to make sure there is slight drag on the feeler guage. well i disagree with that. make sure you can't get the next size in. for example, if your adjusting the intake valves on a stock 400ex make sure you can't get the .005 in with some force. it should be pretty tight with the .004. this is how i got them to quite down a bit. i also gained a little top end speed by doing this too.

How exactly do you check the tensioner?

take the small bolt "8mm" head out of the center of the tensioner, put a small flat screwdriver in there and turn it, ease off the screw driver and see if it turns back by itself. if it does it's working, my 440 is getting ready for it's 3rd timimg chain,

on a 4 wheeler if the timing chain breaks can the piston hit your valves or is it a non interference engine? i am just wonderin cuz my timing chain broek in my car and it hit the valves and bent them so it was an expensive project but ne ways i am lookin a a fourwheeler (300 ex) and the guy sed it had a busted timing chaain and would sell it for cheap thanx

if your timing chain breaks on a 4-wheeler it will most likely bend your intake valves, also if it's too loose it can jump time and bend valves

So what is the verdict on using the CRF timing chain? Will it work?

from the responses on here, the timing chain is working just fine.
