how's the reliability on 440 big bore kits?
I'm thinking of buying a 2000 400EX with a 440 kit, and other mods.

thay have good reliability but only if the person that put it in knows what they are doing. some times there great then some are chit

so some times :) some times :(

if you treat it right, it will last you quite a while. Depending on the compression, u may want to run race gas

You're better off buying the components seperately or having a good shop build it, rather than buying the IMS kit. The Wiseco piston that comes with that kit is a flat top (or has been in the past), so you'd have to deck the cylinder/mill the head to get the advertised 11:1 CR. If you buy a sleeve, a J.E. 10.8:1 piston, and an XR440 gasket set, you'd get the right CR and probably pay about the same as the kit. As far as reliability, I've heard that if you have a shop bore the cases and install an untapered sleeve, there's much less chance of the bottom of the sleeve cracking. Also, it's a good idea to either install oversized head studs or have the holes heli-coiled so they don't pull out. For long-term reliability, I'd also suggest an FST style top end oil cooler and some air scoops to keep things a little cooler.

yes, definately make sure its not a wiseco. Their compression ratings are way off

they use the bigger sleave kit and mill it down to fit stock cases and o ring the top of it to keep it from blowing gaskets and i thing he said 449. bones out the door

i think the other pistons that wiseco makes are not the correct compression ratios either. the pistons are made for the xr400 from what my friend was told when he ordered his wiseco piston in 86mm. i am not saying your wrong, but why would the compression ratios be wrong just for the 440? when we talked to wiseco last, they said they don't even make the 11:1 piston for the 400 anymore and now they make a 10:1 piston that is actually a more accurate compression ratio. i honestly don't know though.
