Hey Guys,

I did a search on this to avoid having to ask here, but I can't seem to find a deffinite answer.

I am looking for the chain size for my 400ex. I know it's a 520 chain but what about the # of links? I found a post on here saying 94 link. Ronnies.com has them listed as 96 link. It looks like the stock Microfiche says 100 link, and atvparts.com says 102 :confused2 !!!!

LOL, can anybody clear this up for me? I sent a quote request to C&D, but I want to make sure I don't end up ordering the wrong one.

Thanks.

-Josh

I looked through the repair manual, and believe it or not, I couldn't find what size it was.

but I guess Rec already answered it.

Thanks guys, this was the thread I found in the search...didn't pay attention to the date on it though so didn't know it was so recent.

Sorry for writing up another post on it.

I think I too will just go out and count the links on my chain to make sure.

Thanks again.,

-Josh

With a 38 Teeth Rear Sprocket you should need a 520-96 link Chain

I just said 100 links because thats what every cataloge that I have lists for the 400ex.

I think if you get a 100 link chain you will have to remove a few to get the right length.

The cataloge's probably do this to cover their butts.

Im definitly not trying to spread any bad info, but if you get a 100 link you know that you are covered.

I doubt C&D stocks chains in 94, 96, 100, and 102 link lengths. That's just absurd. Most likely, they will just sell you a 102, and you cut off as many links as you need.

THEY could probably cut off the excess links, but it may actually be MORE expensive, because they aren't going to give you a discount for the 6 links they cut off, because they can't use them, but they WILL charge you for the labor to cut the chain.

I recently bought a chain from C&D, and they told me that the price for 96 link and 102 link was the same price. They just sold me a 102, and I cut off as many links as I needed to.

Yep, I just replaced mine a few months ago... my local shop sold me a larger chain than what was needed.... around 100+ links... I had to cut some off. I cant remember, but I know I just counted the links from the old chain and cut the extra off the new chain.

all of the books list the 400ex chain link as a 96.. I try to stock what ever I can get my hands on right now I believe I had 104 and 98 link chains.

100% its 94 links. If you have stock gearing and stock length swingarm 94 fits perfect and leaves a lot of adjustment left. I bought a 96 and it was to long even on the tightest setting and a 92 is to short. Also i counted my links on the stock chain. Dont listen to the mags that say 104, 100, 96 etc... Im 100% its 94
