looks like u never greased the bearing carrier. And some water got in there and rusted no bigy just get the rust off and grease up the carrier good use some waterproof grease too.

Looks normal to me.....like 93 said, put grease on it when reassembling.

The manual didn't mention greasing the distance collar inside the carrier, is this correct?

Ya....everything in there needs grease on it. Even the splines on the axle.

ok misunderstanding. that axle is supposed to be brand new, it was for a T4 but didn't fit, it looks alot like it will fit my '86 t3(which is damn near imposible to find an axle for) it dont look like it will work, but iam hoping the bearings will ride on the outside of the groove.

the bearing ride right outside of the indent on both sides.
