View Full Version : TC cam (XC grind) or XR 400 ???

I currently have a TC cam (XC grind). I raced on it all year and did several modifications when I built the motor...so with all the mods together I am not sure what the cam did. I have good all around power.

I am building a motor for a friend and we like some input on deciding which one to get. He can't afford to hardface the rockers, so that leaves us with the softer honda cams and TC's (XC and MX) are reground honda cams I am pretty sure. Also the XR is much cheaper ($140) (TC $175 plus a core cam)

What increases can we expect for the XR 400 cam?

Is it an all around increase by lift and duration or does it simply move the power band to the high side?

Does anyone have the lift and duration specs on these cams?

Thanks for clearing up the mud.

I want to see your 400EX run. It sounds like it has a lot of Power. Let me know when you can ride again. We will take a Trip in Feb. too. We are taking one every Month this year. Haspin was awesome. You would like it because it has some hard trails. The guys we ride with are thinking about buying 50 acres just so we have a place to ride. They are crazy. I can`t wait to see your 400EX.

What kind of riding does he do? I would get a TC Cam. I`m sure they would add more Power. All of the guys on here that have a 416 Piston with the XR400 Cam love it. There was a Post not to long ago that had all the Specs on Cams. I don`t think TC was on it. Call TC. What all is done to your Motor?

Hey Warriorman,
Don't worry, when I get it done, you will know. I haven't ridden for 2 months and can't wait.
The guys motor I am rebuilding raced GNCC with me this year and is racing MX next year with me a little bit and down south.

My motor doesn't have that much done to it - 11:1 416, TC cam (XC grind), lightened flywheel, Sparks X6 system and a filter. It runs OK, but I want a little more. I am not changing my motor for next year because I am getting a-arms, tires, etc. for MX.

Have fun at Haspin. I haven't been there since the Halloween Hundred. I raced the Pro class there and broke my wrist on the last lap...so I decided to tear the 400 down to the frame, inspect it and get it repainted, so here I am...wishing I could ride!!!
Take care
Nick

The xr cam is quite mild. The more modified your motor, the less effective it will be. Good cam for a stock motor, though.

GT Thunder makes a fairly hot drop-in cam, $160.

The XRcam I put in feels alot more than mild..

Well since he is racing MX I would get the TC MX Cam. I`m sure it would add more Power than the XR. Plus it`s still a Drop-In. I would get a TC 416 Piston Kit too. The Cam and Piston would work well together. I want to build my Motor like yours. I am saving for PEP Shocks first though.

OK, it doesn't feel mild, but in comparison to what? If you've tried the other drop-in cams on the market (TC, WB, Web, GT Thunder, etc.) and can say the XR isn't mild, I'd be more inclined to agree.

Remember, the stock XR cam is considered mild for the dirt bike, hence the popularity of the HRC cam. Compare the XR's specs against the other "hotter" cams, it's really a mild cam.

I'm certainly not saying it's a bad cam, or that it's not an improvement over the stocker. I believe that it's an excellent cam for almost stock motors. On the other end of the spectrum, using it in a higher compression 440 motor probably wouldn't be a real good choice (and one of the reasons people think that a 416 is quicker).

I would just get the TC Cam. The XR is a good Cam, but I`m sure the TC and others are better.

TC stands for Tom Carlson. He builds Four Stroke Engines for Top Pro`s like Doug Gust. The name of the company is TC Racing Engines. What were you looking for?

I don't think TC has a web site. He does advertise in ATV Sport and I think Dirt Wheels.

WWW.TCRacingEngines.com is the Site, but it`s not done. You should call TC. His number is 814-723-3514. He will answer all your questions about Cams. If you do call TC, ask him how much a MX 416 National Motor costs.

All the Engine Builders charge different Prices. Curtis Sparks cost $200. I would call TC and ask him what he charges.

$200 wow do you feel a diffrence or do they just save the cam?

I`m not sure, but I think they help Save the Cam and add better Reliability. Call TC or Sparks and ask them all your Questions. They will tell you what to do.
