My brother just bought 98 1200 sportster first real cruise and theres oil all over side of engine coming from air cleaner. took off air cleaner and its soaked is the engine shot or are there any other possibilities may oil tank too full.

i dont see how oil would come from the air cleaner :eek2:

he just bought it from local dealer and one of the back blinkers is kind of bent and scratched maybe it fell over when they were getting it ready we dont know its new to us we cant remember if it was that way when we first looked at it

The motor breathes thru the air cleaner (vent). There's a hose that comes out of each of the heads that goes into the back of the stock air cleaner. I'll ask my friend tommorrow, he has the same Sportster. I have a Softail. It may be different.:confused:

You may not believe me, but it may be from running to rich...mine does the same thing.

thanks any help would be great,a little scary I thought he paid too much anyway if shes blown up he really got screwed.8500 for 98 1200sportster a little steep to me

cruel dude its his new baby oh it has 6000 miles I think he got ganked but he loves it + I do like yours better like the handlebars

It is probably the breather hose puking oil through the airfilter. If the bike hasn't be started or ran for a while they tend to accumulate oil in the hose. Which will then blow it through the backing plate on the airfilter. It could be from the check valve (spring and ball bearing) stickng open. They like to do that if they've been sitting. Usually they will stop puking once the motor heats up and has been run.
