Can someone please tell me what the thickest (heavy weight) oil I can safely run in my 400ex?

if its stock, read the owners manual it will most likely be in there, but i would suggest using 10w 40 (most variety of temps) but if u want ever thicker use 20 wieght

I run mobil 1 fully sythetic 15w50 (red cap) in my quad with no problems. There are several people on here running the same. I wouldn't use any heavier than 50 weight.

I like the golden spectro 20w50, its a little expensive but I think the quality of the oil is worth it.

Amsoil 20w50 during summer, 10w40 during winter. That heavy oil gets very thick in the winter and puts a lot of strain on the starter and oil pump when it is still cold.

how does the mobil 1 synthetic affect your clutch plates? (if at all) thanks...

the mobil one did not effect my clutch. when the bike is cold, the clutch feels a little weird. however, i think it is because i have the sparks 8 plate clutch, not the oil. the synthetic made the bike shift smoother though. i would recommend it.

The Mobil 1 with the red cap (15w50) is pretty good stuff. If you look on the bottle, there are no detergents or additives which can cause your clutch to slip. I don't use it for my own reasons, one of which is that is it cheaper for me to use Amsoil. If I am in a pinch (like I run out of oil on a Sunday afternoon when no dealers or distributers are usually open) I will run the Mobil 1.
