not much difference, just a lot more power than the blaster...Just ride it hard, and modify some stuff...
filter, exaust, suspension, and a few other things...If you have money, but that is the problem i have; never enough money

with a 4 stroke you generally dont have to shift as much as on a 2 stroke or clutch it as much.(from my experiences). with a four stroke you can usally stay on the a little longer since the motor tends to slow a 4 stroke bike down.

No more mixing fuel. Just use Diesel. Works great for Dr.Taco

Try not to rev each gear out too much. With the exception of YZF, CRF, and other modern hp 4-stroke motors, a four stroke(ie 400EX, 300EX, etc.) isn't bulit to rev(relative to a two stroke motor). Remember, generally speaking, a four strokes peak power will be more lower to mid rpm's whereas a two stroke will be mid to upper rpms. Of course this will vary some depending on application(MX, CC, TT, etc) and engine builder. In a nut shell, if it sounds like the motor is about to grenade-your overdue for a shift.

when your going around corners you can usally let it lug itself out of the turn... instead of the blaster you would generally have to downshift or clutch it out

Just ride it like you stole it

2stroke riders that convert to 4 strokes i have noticed are VERY fast riders. because of one big reason. a 2 stroke is more of a workout to keep the thing going like a raped ape. a 4 stroke is a very lazy riding style cause you can lug gears and not use the clutch as much. so say you didnt change your riding style from the 2 stroke to 4 stroke, you would run that thing like it was stolen.

do i make sense?

All though I have never had a blaster I would say you will enjoy riding the 400. I have ridden 2-smoke bikes and the big difference you will notice is that you can now use the gears to help slow you down and you can lug it through some tight turns or techincal obsticles.

Before adding a-arm, axles and etc. I would recomend upgrading the shocks first. The stock 400 is a pretty good set up. I have been racing XC now for a couple of months and the stock 400 is the top set up at the races.

Sorry to burst your bubble westcoastmxer but while reading your fourm i noticed that you said your 13. There is a major problem with that and you racing on a 400 EX. One of my better friends is 15 and just went up to a 400 EX from a 300 EX and he cant race AMA events. AMA rules say you have to be 16 years of age to race a 400 EX.

All he has to do is run outlaw tracks. That's what I do, and I'm 14. There is no problem with it, I started racing my 400 when I was 13 and got top 5 finishes every time. ;)

I with whoever said that about the age on a 400. Yes anybody can ride anysize quad, but the question is cna they race it. My son is 14 and racing a mildly modded 300ex. We race in the 200/300 class. Of course he wants all the power and the bigger bike. So he actually listened to me and honed his skills on the 300ex. Now we race instill in the 300class and lso the next class up, which is usually all 400ex's, z's and 450. he eats most of them up, and its not on power. And the ones that he blows away are kids that are his age and younger that have these big bikes. Please don't jump on me, by now way am i saying that 300 is faster than 400. but the fact is, he gets snickered at and laughed at by the big boys on the line, but as he looks back and sees kids rolled over, quads tangled or ducks on the inside of a bigger quad on a turn, its the finish that counts. Can't wait to move him up on machine, but thats not happening til he is ready. Just my 2 maybe 3 cents worth hahahaha.

the thing is that the 400ex's are cheaper than the 300's!!!and theres not hardly anybody that races blasters and 300ex's at my track.

understand that and until one year ago, it didn't pay to mod out a 300ex for a teenager. But this is the first year that AMA/ATVA has had this class of 200/300. The first national they had only 2 kids showed up, and then each race a few more, we raced at lorrettas and there were a total of 21 14/15 year olds racing blasters, 250x and ex, and 300ex. We race in western KY, and western TN and all the tracks are having the 200/300. Actually now at some of the tracks its the biggest class. Wait til the word gets out, more tracks will include this class.

Try to avoid panic revs or reving the motor excessivly in the air. Four strokes don't take to that like two strokes do. It is best to have a load on the motor when on the gas.:ermm:

The 200/300 class (aka the air-cooled class) has been around for several years. This was the first year that people under the age of 16 years could compete in it.

Yes, I know they have had a 200/300 class, but i meant this is the first year that they have allowed 14/15 year olds to run in a 200/300 class of their own. I think alot of kids first quads are blasters, 250x 300ex 250ex etc... They are going to try to include the mojave in it next year...thats what the rumor is. Think they sort of forgot about it or didn't want to define it exactly, because they would of had 250r running in that class also eeeeek.

Yeah, I race my 250ex. My first race i got killed. Ryan hetrick of hetrick racing was there and he killed all of us(he is first in this class in the gnc's on a blaster). That was at mapleshade mx in sugar grove, pa. Then I got some mods(pipe, filter,20" tires, shocks) and i came in second at freedom, ny to the kid who came in third in my first race. I even led for a lap. But anyways, im doin the same as exmans son and gettin a bigger quad as soon as i turn 16(250r). I might even be able to get a deal of two of them for $3000. My dads friend is sellin em.
