I just get done what I need to at work on the t1. Just no porn on the weekends:(

In the long run DSL is better. Trust me I'm a communications technician.
k2-dawg
08-28-2003, 07:58 AM
Correct me if I'm wrong.....but don't you share bandwidth with other people who are in your same hub with cable, so the more people on-line in your hub the slower your access? And with DSL (Direct Subscriber Line) your connected even tho you're connected through a hub you don't share the bandwith?
I mean, I've heard of people with cable having their access speeds vary depending on the internet usage demand, and I (w/DSL) have not had any noticable change in speed no matter when I'm on-line.
Either way you go, once you go broadband you'll never go back (to dial up)!

DSL is Distance Dependant
The Closer you are to the Provider 'hub, whateveryouwantotcallit' the higher the speeds will be
Yes Cable can get Whored out in communities but for the lot of use that is not a problem
Like I said .... who gives a ho0t what is 'better'
It's ALL better than Dial-up
That is all

nope, I just called to have my cable internet installed. I have seen DSL and Cable in my area.... Cable blows it out of the water. The only DSL around here that competes with it is the business DSL line which is ALOT more than cable. It all depends on your area... DSL vs Cable.

ahhh my area of expertise!!
DSL is better than cable.
the upgrade-ability of DSL and the amount of bandwidth available thru a DEDICATED line to one's house, far exceeds the abilities of current cable networks. period.
yes, DSL is distance dependent, but if you are close enough to your CO and have the choice between the two, you'd be an idiot to pick cable.
let me say this though...once gigabit ethernet is available to homes, its all gonna be slow :D

i was chattin with the cable guy and he told me dsl in my area was being shut down....said it was to much of an expense to the cable companies

There is no comparison for me? The fastest he has ever downloaded anything is like 34k where as i hit over 100k all the time. It must really depend on the area.

34K is slower than dial-up. He should call his provider and have his line checked. The company I work for will not install DSL unless it sync's up at 1472K. My DSL never falls under 1472K and I'm almost 4 miles from my CO

is he subscribed to the largest bandwith service available through that provider?
if the provider is worth a sh*t, they would offer various bandwidth packages.
the maximum that cable can support to one computer is 1.5Mbps, if everyone on the cable grid is subscribed to 1.5M then during peak times you will not be able to access the entire bandwidth alloted to you.
the max available to a DSL user is 2.3Mbps dedicated to that one computer, you don't share that with anyone. and that is within the 22K feet distance from the CO.

Pappy, or anyone else..go to this site and test your uo abd down link speeds. Go to www.dslreports.com then on the left side, click on "our tools" then near the bottom it says speed tests. Then just follow the instructions. Here's my results...not too bad for DSL, but I wish it were quicker:rolleyes:

you cant get 80M from a T3, max is 44.5M
a T3 is 28 T1s. a T1 is 1.44M
an OC3 max bandwidth is 155Mbps. i have our segregated and throttled at certain points for certain applications within our system.

Hey Batgeek - Where did you get your information about cable internet from? I work for Comcast Cable in the Pgh area and everything you said about download speeds are very untrue. We are running at 3 Mb download speeds. I would know I test speeds everyday. Our largest subscriber based areas are still getting 2.4 Mb downloads. Our uploads may not be the fastest with only 256 Kb but most people do not upload alot of files and if they do we have higher tiers of service for them. We find that most people that complain about slow speeds have equipment problems - slow machines, low resources, registry problems (everyone with cable or dsl should goto www.speedguide.net and then goto broadband tools and then SG TCP/IP analyzer and make sure they are optomized for a broadband internet connection). Also for cable internet to work at its peak performance you should have a designated line ran from the the first split in your home directly to the computer. I have nothing bad to say about DSL it is a viable solution for some people. This was not to flame you but instead to inform people. As with the Mickey Dunlop sponsors thread - I am just supporting my sponsers since they pay the mortgage...:D
