in order to get the full effects of the pipe you would want to any way, But yes I think it could run lean which is not good. Did you rejet when you changed filters?

no i didnt

than I'm sure you would need to rejet ;)

u dont have to rejet with a cobra & a uni filter...mine is running fine still

Rejet, pilot and main. The 400ex is lean out of the factory (to meet California emmisions, no doubt), so anything you do to it will only make it run leaner and hotter.

:huh wow thats not saying much for either one of them. how can it be better than stock if you didn't need to rejet?

when it runs lean it is not getting the fuel it needs to keep it from melting parts like a piston . when you add things to increase the flow of air threw the motor you also need to give it more fuel. thats why you will need to rejet. if you don't it's only a matter of time before bad things will happen :confused2

The jets in your carburetor, which meter fuel, are not allowing enough fuel to enter the engine to obtain the optimum air/fuel ratio. Your mixture might be O.K. stock, but when you add an aftermarket pipe and air filter, you increase the amount of air flowing through the engine. The amount of fuel metered in must be increased proportionately, otherwise, a lean condition will result. This is important because of two things: 1) Less than optimum amount of fuel for combustion = less power. 2) Most people don't understand that fuel is the primary means of cooling for the top of the piston. A lean engine runs hot because there is not enough fuel introduced into the combustion chamber to cool the piston sufficiently. If you get the top of an aluminum piston hot enough, it WILL melt!!!

ok now my next question. If im going to put on a pipe should i buy the Kand N jet kit or do i only need to replace one jet ???

Just buy a 40 pilot and a 150 & 152 main. Try the 152 first, if it feels boggy or a little sluggish, go down to the 150. The Dyno-jet kit is a waste of $42, imo. Look in the "Tech Articles" section for a how-to on the pilot jet. You should be able to find jets at any bike shop for about $3-$5 a piece.

It might be a little sluggish, but it should run pretty good.

ok but it wont harm the engine ?

A little too rich is okay, it just won't have the "snap" it would if the jetting were spot on.

ok cool. Because the only time ill need the stock is for like night riding. thats good to now. Now any suggestions on a pipe . I was thinking about the white brothers.

If I get a Yoshimura pipe. which I am (Christmas time) am I going to need to rejet my carb? Since I don't really know much about carbuerators, I don't want to mess anything up...would my local shop jet it for me? I noticed you guys said you don't need to jet if you have a UNI air filter...when I purchased my 400 (used) it had a K&N in it...how can I tell if it's already been jetted (if you need to rejet for a K&N) thanks.

I hate to say it, because I like the performance and sound, but I would stay away from the WB e-series s-bend. Mine, like everyone elses, has cracked at the lower mount and where the pipe meets the silencer body (twice for me). If you have to have a WB, just take it to a welder and have him reinforce those areas.

whats a good silencer ?

I have a WB e-Series and have no copmplaints. It gives a descent power gain and has a real nice sound to it.

i ended up buying atotal of 3 different mains before i got it right. $2.30-$3.5 per jet. i would think a person would have to do lots of re-jetting to make a $40 some dollar kit worth the money

as for pipes, i really like my WB R4, but it is pretty loud. it has a spring on that joint that allows it to flex - no weld to break

My shop here in Pa, allows you to just Swap for the jets you need, thats what I did..Maybe check into that and see if you can just swap em.
