i have a 91 250x. my problem is the chain adjustor loosens once i hit a few bumps, causing my chain to come off or loosen too much. I can move the adjustment on the carrier by putting weight on it. my first question is do i need to just get a new bearing carrier? and second, on a quad this old that i ride in the woods, would a double bearing carrier be worth the extra cash over tapered? Any help is appreciated,

Tapered is more expensive than double row.
Try tightening the bolts tighter.

i cannot tighten them any more, i already fixed 1 hole in the case from the loose chain. and you are correct about the carriers. i had the prices written down backwards. anyone else with knowledge about this?

Are you sure you have the right carrier? It sounds like the carrier is too small, or the hole in the swingarm is too big. Are either of them showing wear?

You didn't grease the outside of the carrier did you?

the quad is totally stock except for exhaust, plastic etc. no grease, never touched. i never tore one apart to know what to do.

Does the swingarm in the back have 2 bolts on each side or just 1 bolt. If it has 2 bolts on each side, go back and forth between the 2 after you tighten each to check to see if they are tight. If it has just 1 bolt do the same to each. That might be your problem.

i always put a very very light coat of grease on the outside of the carrier, between the swingarm and carrier, if you dont, then it wont spin at all, but i never have problems with it loosening

Ya for the 400ex the manual says to put oil on the O rings and grease on the lobes. ...or was that vise versa? .. .

i re-tightened every bolt possible back there, i even replaced 3 or 4. i thought the bearings were shot, and hoped getting another carrier would tighten everything back up. after 11 years of hard riding maybe they finally crapped out! thanks for you suggestions so far, but its still a mess!!!!! where is my 450r at? damn honda's.
