ok...im gettin ready to do another 400ex rebuild. id like to know if using 88/89 250r front spindles hubs brakes and rotors would be of any benefit?

i know the calipers are better(dual piston) but im not sure if the spindles will cause problems or be of any benefit. the 400ex frame geometry corrected or atleast is a bit different then the 400.

no special reason to do this except i have everything to rebuild it either way using 400ex or 89 components:)

any thoughts?

to put the front r brakes on im pretty sure you have to buy the mounting plate from baldwin for like $200.

Also you should get better stopping power because of the dual piston.

yeah but im talking about using R spindles hubs rotors and calipers...not just the calipers. i didnt know if there would be any benefit from the R spindles vs. the 400ex spindle in geometry.

I think the 400ex spindles may be better. my reasoning for this is i just went through a lot of atv mags and under the mods for the modified quads they are all using 400ex spindles and front brakes, even on r's and the pros quads. Not sure why but when all the quads use it im guessing its better. They have a K&K crf 450 and a LSR yz450f, and a bunch of others all using 400ex parts. sorry i couldnt be more help.

everyone uses the 400ex spindles because they are cheap and obtainable. 88/89 spindles are hard to find in good shape and dont come cheap!!!! lol

i think the 400 spindles are lighter than the Rs. thats why they use 400ex spindles and R calipers. not sure but i can check

I"m pretty sure the angle degree of the R spindles differs from a 400ex so your frontend will be different. Would this require 250R geometry A-arms too?? Dont' quote me on that.

Also, aren't the spindles from a 250R made of steel and not aluminum like a 400ex??

I see lots of money spent to do the swap but how much better will the breaking be??? To me and my small bank account it can't be that much better. At least not for my riding capabilities.. Sometimes I cuss my 400ex breaks for working too good..

But we are talkin about pappy so different and bling is good...:D

Sell the 89 spindles and use the EX's.

I think the 400 spindles with the Baldwin setup for 250r calipers would be the way to go.
Are you going to use a 250r rear end? Axle, Carrier, Rotor, Caliper, etc?

actually im using a crf front caliper on the rear

Is the CRF front caliper dual piston, does it mount up to the 400ex mounting plate?

yep the very one.

you have to buy a special mounting plate that replaces the stock one and i cnat remeber what rotor you have to use....but for dual piston rear brakes for under $150 its worth it to me

i'd stick with the ex spindle, but use the r's caliper....just get the bracket ya need for it.

I would use all the r stuff.the geometry might be diffrent but im betting it is minimal. And you wouldn't have to worry about bending a spindle using heavy duty tie rods.

The problem with using ex spindles with with r calipers is buying the $200 mounting brackets.

the goemetry on the r spindles is different pappy, but it is not so bad that it cant be corrected with fully adjustable a-arms.

Pappy, you will need a 250R Rotor and Hub. I know that the caliper and bracket are available from GT Thunder (http://www.gtthunder.com), but also C&D Racing (http://www.cdracingonline.com) may have them.
