does the pilot jet affect performance or just cranking and idling

The pilot jet mostly affects your idle-1/4 throttle range, but it will have a small effect everwhere.

i agree with wilkin. it is mainly for low throttle positions. however, i was getting a really rich mixture at 1/4 throttle and less when i had a 42 pilot in and when the needle was up one postion(clip down one). i talked to sparks about jetting for the pipe and they actually told me to put in a 45 pilot. i was already having idleing problems with the 42 in because it was too rich. i realized that the pilot and needle work together. i moved the needle to the 3rd position(stock) and put in a 45 pilot. now i don't have a rich air/fuel mixture at idle and the bike starts even better. i doubt a pilot jet will affect full throttle performance though.
