I am probably going to get myself killed, but I just picked up an 1986 Husqvarna CR500 dirtbike. Basically the thing is waay too fast and illhandling to be ridden on two wheels. It is a liquid cooled 2 stroke and I think this sucka puts out around 55+HP.

I came across this evil idea of putting it in a go-kart frame :eek2:
I have an existing frame with an 8hp tecumsah in it that I could use as a starting point for a frame. From there it would have to be lengthened and widened to make it somewhat ridable.

Just wanted to see if you guys think I am completely insane, or had any ideas. I am thinking rear tires will not last very long :ermm:

I think you would be better off puttin it in a oddesy or pilot frame. Your cart wont last three rides.

There's nothing saying that it CAN'T be done, but like everyone else has pointed out, any kart frame that has a little 8hp engine won't be able to handle the power of CR500 motor for very long.

If you are going to do it, I would spend a little extra money and get a frame that can handle it.

they do make something like ur project, called shifter carts, they have 125 or 250cc 2 stroke engines on them(Cr250, Yz250, etc)....they are made to handle the engine, so maybe start out with a frame from a shifter cart.....those things are supposed to go about 130mph+, and have a few G's around turns......good luck, let us know how it goes!!!

i used to work at a go kart track, one time a guy brought up a go kart with a 2 cylinder snow mobile engine on it. all ia have to say is make sure you strengthen that frame because it will torque it to all hell.

Thanks for all the responses.

My concerns are exactly yours about the frame. I will surely gusset and strengthen the frame and build it as strong as I can make it. As one said, anything can be done with the right plan.

The only purpose is to build something stupid that will put a :eek2: on your face. I am sure that it will probably not last for too long, but since I have it I want to see how fast it will go in a 70lb chassis :macho

I am sure donuts on pavement will be effortless:D

A guy I work with races a cart with a cr500 motor in it. There are a few around here that have them. They call them outlaws. They have a wing and everything. Very cool to watch!

lmao

Sounds like a cool idea I hope it works out but i'm not gonig to say it will be easy. I think if you started with a frame that is already stong such as a polit (weren't they like 400cc or something?) and then reniforce the heck out of it you should be alright but I would make sure you have at least 8 inches of travel at both ends :)

i hope you know what youre doing. my uncle in florida owns a shifter cart wit ha cr500 2 stroke motor. the frame was hand built by a local custom motorcycle shop (maybe you know them-east coast chooppers). its all aluminum. anyway, the thing FLYS. i rode it for maybe 45min. once you start you can stop, ill tell you that. im assuming your motor is very similar to the cr500, so ill warn you in advance. be very careful. it pumps out rediculous amounts of power. i doubt your frame could handle it for long. BTW, its gonna be difficult to ride it out on the trails, they make little low end power. anyway, have fun and let us know hwo everything works out.

o yea, and if i had it shipped, it wouldnt even be worth it because I could easily spend 400-500 on it.

well ive heard of peeps sipping quads for 250-300 and it weighs about the same(like 425 lbs) so you would be spending 450-500 total dollars for an odyssey and it shipped. oh well, bummer your not interested.

I am planning on making it like a shifter cart (pavement use only) As for knowing what I am doing, yes I have a pretty good idea as to how to make this work. It cannot be too difficult if I am handy with a torch and mig.

The hardest part is going to be the trial and error of making the machine long and wide enough to make it able to handle turning and not flying over backwards. I am gonna fab the rear brakes from a 400ex so it should be able to stop pretty damn well for only being 150 or so lbs.

If it comes out clean, and stays together for a while I plan on going nuts on the powder coating :p

Well, the kart frame I have now looks similar to the kart in these pics.

http://www.rocketkart.com/

If it could handle 2 rocket engines, that create 400ft/lbs of thrust each.....I think I can make a little cr500 work :eek2:

Personally I don't like the looks of that frame, But if you do its your project.

Now that you have told us it will be a shifter cart I would look around for a shifter car frame (somethnig that can handle 250cc +) and then reninforce that :)

It is not the same at all, but somewhat similar.

Found another site where a guy put a GSXR1100 in a kart frame :eek2:

Naahh, just put it on a chainsaw. That's what I would do. :)

I have actually wanted to do something like this for a while now, and still plan to. If you plan it out well enough, take your time, and do things right, it will work out. I wouldn't plan on taking it into the rough stuff much though without some suspension. Have fun. :)

ever think of putting suspension on the seat? that will make it much easier to ride;)
