View Full Version : Backfiring 400

When I run my 400 up through 3rd gear and let off the gas without pulling in the clutch. It will backfire and sometimes die when it gets to low RPM's. Does this mean I'm running lean? And if so would it be the pilot jet?

What are you jetted at? Did you rejet with your mods?

I'm running a 158 main, stock pilot, needle in stock position

The main jet is spot-on....lower the clip on the needle one notch, step up to a 40pj, and set the mixture screw at 2 turns. Idle adjustment might be necessary after all is said and done.

The 40pj will be longer than the stock #38, this is normal, nothing to worry about.

Hope this helps....Good Luck.
