87 trx 250 starter does not work

my dad has a 250 four trax and the machines starter does not work. we just put a a new brushplate and brushes on and still does not work. you can hear the solenoid give a hard click, is that normal or is it fried. open to suggestions

Starter could definately be fried.

It also could be a bad starter reduction gear (located under the left crank case cover) or starter idle gear (Thats just above the left crank case cover , its has own lil cover.. I think).

But other than that you would have to open that starter up and run continuity tests on like 4 different areas. I manual could tell ya how.

our 4x4 did this... we tried to rebuild it but it didnt work.... so we had to buy a new one.
