I have a 99' 400ex and it has a quiet tick, like the valves are ticking, but I just checked and adjusted the valve clearence a week ago. I do regular oil changes and use Honda HN4 10w-40.
Could it be the timing chain:confused:

i think some people have problems with the timing chain making noise if their idle is set too low. also, are you sure you set your valves correct? i found out that mine runs smoother and quicker if you adjust your valves where its hard to move the feeler guage around between the rocker arm and subrocker arm.

It could also be the compression release mechanism on the cam. It holds one exhaust valve open at low RPM to make it easier to start.
