posted this in steering and suspension, then realized it should be here. anyway:

got 22x11x9 razrs for rear and 23x7x10 for up front. i have white brothers e-series slip on, white bros rev kit, k&n filter and jet kit.

i mostly ride trails, play on ash dumps, etc. clearance was an issue...that's why i went with taller tires. i lost a TON of bottom end with these tires. what sprocket comb. will give me my bottom end back? and which manuf. is the best bang for the buck? Renthal is too expensive.

top speed isn't a big factor as i rarely get it thru 5th as it is around here. but i don't want my cousin running past me on the road to the trails on his z400 either.

thanks for the reply, but that really doesn't help. i don't care about mph., i don't drag...i have an awd talon for that (mid 11's at 125).

i want the quad to flip over backwards when i blip the throttle. well...almost. it's a lot harder to get it up in 2nd now. i'm a throttle-response junkie.

wait....i just tried sprocket combinations to get the numbers back to the stock mph numbers. looks like 14/39 is closest.

15/38 - 2.53 gear ratio; 68.62 top mph
14/39 - 2.79; 68.59 mph
14/40 - 2.86; 66.88 mph
13/38 - 2.92; 65.37 mph

^bump

some one has to have 22" tires besides me.

14/38 or 14/39 like you said you like a lot of bottom end so go with 14/39. I like sunstar sprockets. get steel front and rear

before you go off changing your sprockets, why dont you try removing your choke? lots of people have done it on here any most say it helps with throttle response a little. it's a free mod as well.

PA winters get cold. it's bad enough to start it with the choke. i'd like to keep it.

i would just try a 14 tooth sprocket at first. you will loose a noticable top speed with just that. buy that one first and see how it is and if you decide you want more lowend, buy a new rear. i don't see how it is going to be possible to put a much bigger sprocket on the rear without removeing the skid plate. if you put a bigger pilot jet in your bike everyone says that their bikes start easier in the winter without the choke than they did with the choke. i did remove the choke and i think it is a waste of time. i wouldn't do it again.

14/40 would be too, in my opinion, you would only be about to go about 50 or so. but that is what you are going for.

check my 2nd post. 14/40 will still go 66.88 mph with stock rev limiter and 22" tires. i just put a wb rev/timing box on that increases redline 1200 rpm. she'll go plenty fast...76.61 with this setup. with 14/39 it'll go 78.57. where the hell can anyone go 78 mph?!?!

i put the 170 jet in today....it has pleeeenty of top end. i may go 13 front and stock rear. it'll still go 74.88 mph.

just can't decide. but one thing is for sure...i have NOOOOO bottom end with 22" tires and 15/38.

what the heck kind of mods do you have done to your bike??? a 170 is pretty big unless you are running some internals. i say a 155 keihin jet seems about right. you need to remember a bigger jet does not make the bike faster (top end or low end) unless you need it bigger. also, the dynojets have a different numbering technique than keihin. i have been told that the dynojets are a little bigger for the same number jet. for example, a 152 keihin jet is similar to a 150 dynojet from what i have been told. with the 170 in, i bet you have less top and bottom end power than stock if your only mods are the e series, filter, and rev box. aftermarket tires make you feel as if you have 10 more miles per hour up top than the stock tires since they are harder.

that's what it dynojet called for. i'm at 1200 ft, e-series, no airbox lid....170. had 165 in at first and the porcelin was whiiiiite. also had some detonation with the 87. put 93 in and then went up to 170...no detonation and plug color is closer.

you can't always go by the plug color. the additives in the fuel these days sometimes make it impossible to read a plug. the additives in the fuel here turn the plug a light yellow. it won't get to a nice tan color until i have well over two hours on the plug. most places do recommend a jet that is too rich. i guess it is so people don't have problems running too lean. i would put in a 160 at largest and just see how it runs. run it for a little while and see how it feels. if it runs worse, take it out. it only takes 3 minutes to change the mainjet on a 400ex. on the bottom of the carb there is a 17mm bolt that you will loosen and take off (make sure you turn your fuel off first). you will still loose a little fuel. then use your 6mm socket to remove the mainjet and put a different one in. i would try this first because when i was running a 165 mainjet with my complete sparks x-6, uni filter, no lid, and no choke, the bike was slower than stock. i went down to a 158 to 160 and the bike ran great. good luck.
