depends on how much u wanna dump into it....... but the basic ruit is to go.....

416 bore
11:1 compression
Exhaust
cam
now if u want to get a little more serious get it ported and a bigger carb.

an if u REALLY wanna spend money stroke it

/\ /\ Ya, what he said.

Check my mods below. I have yet to line up against a piped Raptor that can pull on me. Along with the motor mods, change to a 16t front.

I agree with castor I have built alot of budget 416 motor for guys that will run toe to toe with a piped raptor without a problem. When you buy a motor kit from most builder and do it yourself you are spending to much money they are not sending you anything that you can't buy elsewhere for less with the same results.

Yeah, what they said.

A big bore kit with a cam will run with a raptor, and you can probably install it yourself for a total cost of roughly $800

A complete package of big bore, cam, headwork, carb, and possibly a stroker crank will eat a raptor alive, but you can't do it yourself. Total cost of roughly $4000

Yup, $800 is what I spent on mine. Then I added a FCR so throw in another $400. The motor work got me neck and neck with piped Raptors. The carb put me 1-2 bike lengths ahead.:macho

It takes $1500 in motor mods in a 400EX to keep up with a banshee in the sand. However, it takes $1500 in suspension mods for a banshee to hang with a stock 400EX on a good MX track.

Neglecting rider ability, of course.

Right on....I didn't know the stock suspension on a 400ex was that good, or the stock suspension on a banshee was that bad. I never rode my banshee w/ stock suspension, I immediately changed it out w/ +2 a-arms and works shocks.

doesnt a 400ex have the best suspension of any other model thats not race ready?

hehe my friend told me that he read somewhere that they make a turbo for the 400 that costs like 2000 2500 and almost doubles the output for the machine....any of u seen this?....sounds like that one mod alone would kill a craptor or shee!

If you just want to smoke him on top, open your exhaust up, remove your airbox lid, chop your front fenders, and mount the tinyest damned rear sprocket you can find on it! He'll kill you out of the hole, but you'll have some top speed!

Before i put on my fcr 39 i would keep up with a piped raptor. i would alway get him off the line but when he got into 5th gear he started pulling from me but, that would be 3/4 of a mile down after i put my fcr39 on i was running with nobbies and he had paddles we took off dead even and at about 3/4 down i would start to pull. if i had my paddles on i would have smoked him off the line and held the lead and then some
