the choke being removed makes is easier to start in winter?

Quite a bit. I went through 3 batteries in the first 400. It seems like you have to crank them forever in the winter. With the choke removed it is not the case. A couple blips of the throttle hit the button and it's running. No worries.

You will have to jet the carb to your bike but I can help you with that if needed. Or at least give you a base line to go off of.
