my 400ex is smokin fairly bad... is it just the rings or could it be sumthing to do with the valves??

You Should get new piston and rings

probably the rings and valve guides and seals. if you are going to tear it apart to put new rings on I would just spend the money on a high compression piston and a cam. you will get a little bit more power without getting rid of reliability. good luck
