I have a 400ex and I am wondering if anyone around here has put on an air shifter on their 4 wheeler. I got tons of air cylinders and other parts and im lookin for something to do while i have a broken ankle. IF anyone has, tell or show me how you attatched the cylinder to the shifter. THANKS!!

most people dont ride when they have broken bones but ive never heard of someone doin that to a quad it would be pointless

simmer down there turbo:ermm:

air shifters are used on bikes and quads alike..primarly for drag racing applications.

sorry to hear about the ankle...and where there is a will...theres a way:D

Usually doesnt a air shifter get rid of the clutch? Therefore you would need a CDI designed for that to cut off the power for a split second to releive tranny pressure inside, or some damage would be done after some time

no im pretty sure a clutch is still used at least when first taking off (drag bike) but i have no idea if it can be made to work for the type of riding he wants to do. my old man made a metal stick thing to push in the clutch on his truck when he broke his leg so ....IF THERES A WILL THERES A WAY:D

you could still ride, just get one of those hand shifter things that bolts on your shift lever..presto:D

i dont plan to ride. i plan to do it as something to do while i cant ride or work or walk. my neighbor put one on a raptor and a banshee (he fabricated parts). its used to shift in drag racing. you dont pull in the clutch all the way when using it, just enough to let it shift freely. the thing is on a 400ex theres no place to really mount a bracket for the air cylinder without having alot of metal parts to get it in place right.

i just finished... as i was trying it out the wire got caught in the chain... it ripped out of the solenoid so i had to order a new one.

It does work though, theres a little red button i put on the headlight and starter switch that switches the gear and kills the engine at the same time.

you have to use a cluthc ot get started but on a cut tranny that is sincro mess like the 400s you can shift without using the cluthc y you are going, it will hurt the bike if you doo it all the time, i would just rig up a hand shifter and move the clutch to the right side of the handlebars so you can operate the lever and clutch at the same time.

it will be fine, motorcycle drag racers do it. norman teal from team machine told me how to do it and he builds some of the fastest motorcycles on the east coast.

Using the clutch is over rated.;)

THANK YOU for the image! on the back of that plate i made that has the cylinder mounted on it there is (was, it got broken) a 3 way air solenoid. from that one hose goes to the air cylinder and one goes to an air tank. the solenoid is an electrical thing when you put juice to it it lets air ithrough like a valve, well it is a valve. i have it set up so when i push a button it opens the valve up and lets air into the cylinder (about 60 psi) which shifts the transmission and also kills the engine. and you do use the clutch to take off

I think this is a pretty wild design. Has alot of potential. Stay with it, you may just make a few $$$$ from it... :D I think anyone out there that would like to ride a sport quad that does not have good use of their legs would spend good money for something like this. JMO...

You could just get an override tranny. They do wonders in dragging out in the sand. Im not sure about air shifters though, you could probably use one with an override tranny and make the time between shifts.
