Hey all,

Who was the person here that put together an aftermarket oil cooler set-up from Jeggs? He listed all the parts needed and had braided stainless lines wuth anodized fittings??

Any one remember??

Also, what does the FST cooler cost?? I cant find the website...

FST cooler is like $100 or more. just pick up a permacool trans cooler for like $30 and if you want you can get some stainless lines. but they arent cheap

Hey Vegas400,

Well, I know you listed the parts list before, but I didnt write it down.

I just want to see if the extra money I may spend is worth it for the anodized fittings and braided lines. Also, where do you go about finding installation instuctions for this? If you peiced it together, there arent any, right??

I may just go with the FST because I'm not really mechanically inclined and would need some sort if instructions....I cant wing it or figure it out like some of you folks here.

first off i have tried several time to get someones left over instructions to use them to install my cooler, but no one has provided me with any(they said the instructions were very vauge anyway). so i did the next best thing, i ask how to do it. after tearing the eng down and asking for sure one more time, it is more than clear where to tap into the case cover and where to tap into the head. lots have said they dont what to tap into their engine unless there were threads there from the factory,,, i guess they dont want an extra cooler very bad. if you would like i can type you up a set of instructions with pictures included(very descriptive(sp?)). here is the parts list again. i had to have a buddy of mine tap the head and case cover, cause i dont have a NPT tap.

Part#.......................Price........Qt....... .Description
771-1009.................33.99.......1..........P-C 3/4"x5"x7.5" cooler
555-100011..............15.99.......2..........45 deg -06 AN fitting
555-100911..............27.99.......1..........6' -06 steel braided hose
555-100021..............14.99.......2..........90 deg -06 AN fitting
799-660450...............3.99........2..........-06 AN to 1/8 NPT fitting

total.....................$140.91

this may seem like a high price for just parts, and it kinda is, but you will have one of the best looking kits on the block. i decided a while back i was not gonna have ugly hose clamps on the 'ol 400 anyway. the tapping of the side case is kinda tricky, so you will want someone that is experienced with tapping stuff to do it. ohh i almost forgot. you will also need a small set screw from any hardware store to plug the old passage way. maybe a dollar at the most.

im thinking yes, but does anyone know for sure if oil still runs through your stock cooler when an extra is added? i see no reason it would not...

see woodwardspecialties (www.woodwardspecialties.com) for pics and some info on the cooler....

full color instructions....(very descriptive)

and yes... oil will still flow through a large cooler....

jsut simply adding an inline cooler will help... but will not help that much....

this cooler, similar to the design of the FST, bypasses the oil line that goes up the side of the cylinder....

Description

45 deg -06 AN fitting (2)
90 deg -06 AN fitting (2)
06 AN to 1/8 NPT fitting (2)

What size are these fittings? Like what is the oil line connection size, and what is the threaded size?

It looks like the threaded size is 1/8.. but im unsure. I was just at the store looking for some of these and I didnt have enough info to find the right ones.

The 90 degree fittings, they are threads on one side and ribbed on the other? (ribbed for the oil line connection)

Or is it just the -06 to 1/8 npt fitting that is threaded on 1 side and ribbed on the other?

Actually if someone could explain those fittings a little bit more that would be great cause Im slightly confused on what i need to get. http://www.off-road.com/atv/projects/400ex/coolkit/pict0069.jpg

45 deg

90 deg

1/8 npt to -06 AN
http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=30303&prmenbr=361

the strait fitting takes the place of the brass 90 deg in the pic above. the 90 deg screws on to that, then the hose into the red side of the fitting. the hose is size -06. the 45deg screws onto the cooler then the same out tf the cooler to the head cover. mostly this is just a showy way to route the oil. the brass fitting is the cheeper and perfectly good way to do it, i just wanted a more flashy way to do it.

That is a HUGE help.

And now I see why them Jeggs fittings cost alot.. cause they look real sweet.

Thanks man.

I got some fittings... from RamChargers. they're anodized too.

Hey Vegas a couple more questions.

Can I use 90 degree fittings on the cooler? Or do I have to find them 45s.

Also how did you mount the trans cooler? Like what clamps did you use and such.

L.Vegas400

you can use the 90 or the 45, i was looking on how i was gonna mount it and decieded that the 45 would kinda point the line back the eng better than the 90. i havent put it on yet,,,,,, no that i think about it i may need to get 3 90s and 1 45. the best thing to do is find out where you want the cooler and look where the lines are gonna run and buy the fittings accourding.

Hey Vegas or anybody else.

I found a trans cooler off an old Bronco 2. I want your opinion on if you think its good enough.

Its the basic tube style. 10" X 4". The tube outside dia. is 3/4".. so thats probably a 1/2" inside. Its has 2 rows of tube.

I really wanted the higher efficiency stock style, but the fit on this is perfect. I'm going to look for a better efficiency one tomarrow at a junk yard, but if I dont find one do you think this will be ok?

Also are the inlet and outlets better on top or on bottom.? Now they are on top.

Hey Nak...I think you are on the right track with the cooler...If you succeed..I would like to follow suit..

I would choose to the bottom, "why" because it would seem this method would yeild the shortest amount of hose in which to push the oil through....

Keep me posted....

personally i dont think it matters, top or bottom. anybody else?

nakomis0
08-22-2003, 07:52 AM
I was thinking about it, and I think it may matter a bit....

I put it with the outlets UP... because I think it will help keep the oil in the cooler if the bike sits for awhile. If it was down I was thinking it would have a tendency to run out of the cooler. I really didnt think about it alot, it was just easier with the outlets on top for me.. and I had that lil theory,,:ermm:

BTW, I just finished the cooler setup. I also started my bike about 2 minutes ago... its the firstime its started sense the rebuild.. thank god its done.:)

i started thinking the same thing, but, have you ever siphoned(sp?) something. i think it would drain back either way. when you shut it off the is not gonna be any oil covering the top fitting so the tank being lower than the rest, it would suck back in, or so it seems. not really sure. :ermm:

Well heres a pic of my 'RamChargers' kit.

I went with a permacooler 5x10 cooler. First impressions and I was extremely impressed. I road it for about 10 minutes very lightly and the temperature barely went up. The oil stayed at 100 degrees. and the cooler was still very cool to the touch. Also looks pretty trick......
