take him to look at the new ranchers that are coming out i think they are either 400cc or 450, although they are over 4 grand, we have 2 rancher 350s and they have held up excellent. also have him look at some of the used foreman 450s, you will be able to find plenty around 4,000. if you want to go the yamaha route, you could go and look at the kodiak, which i believe is a 400 or 450, but im not completely sure. my dad has a polaris 700 and hasn't had any problems yet, but i have had many friends that have had problems with their polaris 500s so im not sure if you would want something like that, i think for reliablity i would go with a honda rancher, honda foreman, or yamaha kodiak.

i would say find a nice used honda rubicon 500, or a polaris 500, or maybe if like the other one said if you go yamaha get a grizzly 660. i would say the honda rincon but they are expensive.

i know you guys are gonna get mad at me but i really like the polaris sportsman 500 or the 700 but i don't think you can find a 700 for around 4000. i dunno though. If he wants to manual quad i would only go with a honda.

I'd say go for a arcitic cat 500 or polaris 500 both good quads little on the heavy side but what every you think good. the honds bottom out pretty hard on big pot holes but that's just my .02
