that knob should be the compression adjustment. the rebound adjuster should be located at the very bottom of the shock. i belive you will want to turn it clockwise to decrease rebound.

here is a thread with some info in it...

proper shock set up (http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67032)

another quick question. i believe i have found the adjustment but i want to make one hundred percent sure that it is it. on the bottom of my shock body there is a place to stick an allen key wrench. is this my preload adjustment. sorry for the lamness but your help and answers are appreciated.

On a stock 250r rear shock there are three adjustments. compression,pre-load and rebound. To adjust compression you turn the clicker on the resivoir. To change pre-load you need to loosen or tighten the two lock nuts on top of your spring to either stiffen or soften up your pre-load. Finally to adjust the rebound look on the very bottom of the shock (on the clutch side) right above where the shock mounts to the linkage. There will be a place to insert a small screw driver, that is the rebound adjustment. There are three rebound positions on that shock, turn the screw to change them. Hope I helped you out and good luck dialing in your shock

Lots of great info here, but one looming cloud for me is:

I want "faster" rebound for my stock 400ex shocks.

The manual explains the dial screw for rebound with SOFT and HARD...
I want a faster rebound than I have, would this be done turning it to SOFTer, or HARDer?

Thank you, and sorry for my learning curve :confused2
