...especially those who live in KY and buy from TN.
It took them 2 years almost, but the IRS caught up to us today.

We purchased a Recon and 250ex (now for sale) at a great dealer in TN back in October of 2001. We didnt have to pay KY sales tax b/c it was out of state so the tax didnt apply. Well, they thought they would be cool and get info on our purchase...

The Kentucky Revenue Cabinet has received information through and exchange of information agreement between Kentucky and Tennessee that you purchased tangible personal property without payment of the applicable Kentucky Tax. Therefore, a sales/use tax assessment for the above period has been calculated.
How can the tax apply when we bought it...out of the state.

Anything to make a buck these days...so now we owe $584 to the wonderful IRS.

The dealers around here are part of the problem, they all cry and complain because more people travel to TN to buy stuff b/c its cheaper. The dealers around here rip you a new hole in your wallet, especially if your "un-knowledgable".
It sux, but thats part of it I guess.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up on this.
Dont ya just love the IRS? :scary:

Your really supposed to do this on all purchases. Unfortunatley that is the law.

Here is IL we also have another thing we have to fill our for our company. If for some reason another company doesn't charge us sales tax, we then have to pay the sales tax directly to the state. Just little in's and out's you have to learn through the years.

Doibugu2 is exactly right, that's the law in nearly all the states. When you purchase out-of-state you generally don't pay that state's sales tax. However, you are required by law to report that purchase to your residing state. Very few private citizens actually do this and it's not often that states check up but it seems you were one of the unlucky ones to actually get nabbed.

cheetah, it still would be cheaper going out of state, buying the quad there and reporting the tax to your own state. I can't believe your dealers are still in business selling the 400EX for $5999--that's several hundred over Honda's MSRP!! Is the Raptor $6999?

I know it's crazy! I went in there and showed them the sticker and laughed at them. A warrior is $4699 and Guy a raptor is $6500.:) They didn't have a price on the YFZ so I don't know what to expect there.

My banshee and z400 were stolen on jan 2 2003, I was taxed for both of them because i had them on january 1, i paid over 200 bucks to have 2 quads in my possesion for 1 day. Our government sucks.. i am beginning to wonder if this is a free country afterall.

07-27-2003, 03:36 AM

You Guys think you can get away without paying taxes out of state. If thats the case then if live a few minutes from the state line how in the hell could you sell anything. Everybody would travel a few minutes to save hundreds. You should know that the goverment wants every penny that they can get.

my paps bought a polaris 700 in canada and we live in maine no trouble yet haha

07-27-2003, 03:57 PM
do they bother you coming across the border with the new quad on the back?

07-28-2003, 01:42 AM
I bought a polaris sport 400L in 1997 and had them put a rack on the back of it so it could be considered a non sport quad since it had racks. This way i could use a farm ID and not pay taxes on it.. Well about 2 years ago I got a bill from the IRS for about $400 or so. It was the taxes I owed on it since i didnt' pay them when i bought it.. LEsson learned.. you can't get away from taxes....

We did this...used the farm factor. Well, the IRS decided they didnt like that and want proof...so we would have to fill out some long *** form telling them we're farmers...when really we are not. All we have is 3 horses and 4 acres... :grr:

Perhaps the people on the other side of the state line would travel to your shop? :o
