heres what i did

first i took undid the negative battery cable and took off the front plastic, then took off the starter assembly and cut the black rubber tube that covers the wires all the way down to where it splits off. then undo the three screws inside the headlight assembly. pull the small metal bracket out and take out the starter button.

cut the wires out then remove the coating thats around the wire. connect the wires with the cr kill switch as shown.

wrap the handlebar once with electrical tape, this prevents the starter from grounding out and you need to bolt up the wire loop as shown
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid71/pc545a26c4ea67fffeda0e1c31e7ac08f/fb94c651.jpg

then once you get that done wrap all the wires in electrical tape, and

click the following two links for high quality images of the 400ex electrical system

I also wired my pro design kill switch into the stock kill slider switch

after i cut the wires

with the kill switch, the green wire is the ground so just hook those up to
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid71/pa5e5286c4a85b2b36d181a3c3adb8104/fb94c65e.jpg

all hooked up

any ?s about it just ask

Good pics. If you use a YZ kill switch you do not have to cut the ground. The YZ has no ground. So just hook the YZ kill switch wires up to the wires that go to your push button start switch.

Oh yeah, don't forget to wire your clutch switch wires together too if your using an aftermarket clutch perch and lever. That's so you can still start the quad in gear.

sorry i forgot to mention that one, i cut back the wires all the way down to where they split off and connected them there, clean and out of sight

I have a different button but i did it different. i just took the 2 wires from the old start button and connected them to the 2 new wires on the kill switch. and i left the ones connected from the perch and then just taped off all the extras. works fine to. How can i tell if i have the button that uses the handle bar as a ground?

you have the correct button it is an isolated circuit.

so does that mean the bars are the ground ? Or one of the wires is a ground? Thanks

On the switch that I sell one of the wires is the ground when used as a kill switch but when wired as a start switch it is not going to ground it is just completeing a curcuit. You can use a cr kill switch although I would not recommend it. with that style of switch you are going to have grounding problems.

Nice thread it should go into the Tech Articles.

holy old post

use the yz dirtbike kill switch. if you look at the pics i originally posted you see the cr switch having to wire to the handlebar there. with the yz its a closed system and you're better off with it bein that way

i had a cr and it quit working after about 6 months just installed a kx kill switch and it seems alot more durable, i like the lil red button better as well rather than the big one as the cr has ~

yup cut them open, and attach them,i dont think it matters which wire you hook it up to,unless i hooked them up to the right ones the first time, very good mod to do if you need space on the handlebars like i do with the flexx bars

haha WOW man, u do have some crammed up bars dont ya, i dotn really need the space, i just keep slidin my off-on-off switch to off  and it looks so much cooler than that big blocky thing, and do you remember what color those 2 clutch wires were on yoru 300ex? i have to find mine and ground it, but i cant remember what color the damn thing is

haha and plus i need room for a handguard mount to,ehh go figure, that is the only negative thing so far i have to report on the Flexx bars is that they are to cramped up
and if i remeber correctly one is yellow and red and the other is green and yellow,i no for sure the one is yeller and red but not to posotive on the other wire
