Hey, my dad and i might think about doing a conversion. Well it all started with my blaster and his 250exc (ktm) we were thinking how cool it would be to put that Ktm beast in a quad frame. If you have not ridden the ktm, it has awsome power, can whellie like a dream, but is user friendly in the woods. my question is, what type of conversion would be most benifical. I don't really want to build a 2-stroke, but if i could get ahold of a ktm motor, i would. Would a cr 250 be a good one too??? i want MORE POWER...more than my ex has. The motor cant be a new one either, it has to be one that has been around, so i can find them easy and cheap. So no 426 things.

What are some good 2 and 4 stroke motors that would be easy to find with awsome power.
Last question....would a shee frame be a good host?? cause i really like how the shee looks, but i dont want the bike. And it also already has a radiator....so....??

I got rid of my 8hp B&S for a 12hp B&S Industrial. Much broader power curve and faster blade speed. My yard looks like astro-turf when I mow now:D

if you want real power i would get that cr500f 2 stroke dirtbike engine that service honda sells and put that in a frame.

I would imagine a 'shee would hold up alright, assuming you gusset the frame. I would look more into 250cc 2 stroke engines, anything more would be almost too much stress. But for the money it would take for the conversion, you could build an 80HP Banshee that would be faster than any bike engine.

xr 600

Well i was thinking the shhe frame, cause you could find them all over, since they have been around since the 80's

i was also thinking of the xr650 in a 250r frame....how would that be, i dont want a killer bike, just something that could stomp a shee or a rap.

are the 250cc bikes faster than a shee??

there are some drag 250r's that walk over shee's. But building somethign from scratch thats going to beat shee's and raptors on a budget...... good luck. the xr650 motor isnt going to do it. And the Cr500 motor wont work. People have tried. There is no counterbalance on the motor. It will litterally shake the frame till it breaks. Not enough padding in the world.

There is one motor though. The ATK 700 2 stroke. Good luck finding a motor for cheap though.

ok, drop that idea.

last try:(
What conversion would you guys do....some 4 stroke ones please.

if not i will poss just get a beat shee, and fix that up, or a zilla.

if a yz250 HAS a counter balance that would be the way to go only 50 more cc's liquid cooled WAY more power so on and so fourth

I woudl go with getting a shee if all you want is dragging. They are cheap and there are millions of parts for them.

If you want all out drag. I have a couple tips.

1. Override tranny... Costs about 400$ but makes such a huge difference its unbelievable. Hard to get used to shifting with it though.

2. CPI inframe pipes

3. have it ported as well as V force reeds and small stuff like domes and modding stock carbs.

4. boost bottles do nothing.

5. get extended swingarm and ultralight haulers

You will kill on the dunes. Dont need alcohol, and the stock 350cc will be fine. I saw a guy with this setup kill everyone Memorial. The main difference between him and the rest is the tranny.

no not just a dragger, i just ride with those quads and i need to keep up.:(

and there are no dunes in pa

has anyone done a cr250 (or any 250) to a 250r or 400ex conversion????

hmm. Whats wrong with the 400ex then? If I were building a conversion for dirt I would do a KTM6** or around there. Maybe a 5**cc. Put it in an old 250r frame and gusset the cr*p out of it. :ermm:

well i want a winter project, i really wanted to "build" a quad. but everyone is saying it will rip apart a frame, and i dont want that. I was going to build my quad, then sell the ex, so i can ride my new one, then get my rap and keep this as a bike my friends can ride when theres are broke...which is often
my dad is selling his ktm for $900, so i will see if i can grab a motor if not i am going to look for the cheapest shee i can find

you know.... I sold my raptor to buy a 400ex....

the only good thing was it was fast. Becides that it sucked. The motor doesnt put out enough power per cc. Its the most top heavy quad ever built. And its as unreliable as a 2 stroke. I blew mine up after 4 months.

well i always wanted a raptor, i know 2 people with them, and i still really want one. Just i am not going to buy a 2001, only a 2002 and newer.

so it looks like the shee then.....maybe a kawi tecate ...hmmmmm;)

well i am going to stick with a 250 motor...that is plenty fast for what i want, my rap will be the trail bike, this the track bike.

i read this tread at bluetraxx about a yz125 being faster than a rap, so the 250 should have no prob...???

http://www.bluetraxx.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=203051&highlight=faster#203051

so i guess i am going to drop the shee thing...the money part is not the prob right now, but what frame is a "cool" frame
how bout them 250r(suzuki) not the honda
or a 300ex/cr250

hey, if ya still have it in the winter i will...which i doubt you will....actually that is the range that i was looking for a good motor.
if i can find a motor like that i will just go with a 250. Cause wont a kx500 or cr500 be a little TOO fast in the woods.
