View Full Version : trick to putting on grips?

01-18-2002, 01:41 PM
I recently installed a twist throttle so I have to put on new grips. I have never installed grips before. Can anyone give me instructions on how to put these things on. I bought grip glue also.

well jabber this one may hurt u but if u have a air compressor hook up the blower gun and put it on the end of the grip hit the button and push it on goes on in 2 seconds and it will never move again... this is how i do them all the time... it expands the grip when u put in the air and then it shrinks when u take off the pressure...

Would there be a way to keep the air in there, to give the false impression of a larger size....or should I stick to stuffing the two pingpong balls in first??

LMAO,,,thats good stuff.

400ex-xc,,,,this is the hardest way to do it but just twist and pound the suckers on dry. That's what I do but they never will move after you do it this way. IT's hard to do but they will eventually go on you just gotta play with them and work it on there..

ok thanks, ill try the compressed air, but should i be using glue or not?

01-18-2002, 02:47 PM
I've found that grip glue is a waste,,,never ever worked for me.

I just used the pound and twist method on the throttle pipe, after a failed attempt with glue, after the work i put into it, it better not ever come off.

Ok, after your done riding and want to put the new grips on, put some hairspray in the grips. Then they slide right on. Of course, you won't be able to ride for about a couple hours. But this way is the easiest i've found

I go with kabd69667 on this one. I use hairspray on my mountain bike grips when I change them out and it works bettar than anything else I've used.

i cant pound them on dry because the grips are bigger than the od of the handle bars and the slide on to easy, i need new grips any ways maybe some 909 grips

I know this is gonna sound crazy and you guys are gonna wail on me BUT...

Try using WD-40 when you put your grips on. I thought it was a joke too, but I tried it and it works. Spray the bars, slide the new grips on, and let them dry. They set up better than if they're glued.

The WD-40 trick is NOT like using brake fluid to shine up your pipe. The brake fluid thing is something you talk your buddy into trying.

I was jumping my 300ex after i put grip glue on them and I went up in the air and I was pulling back on the handlebars and they both sliped off and I went flying off the back of my ex and hit my hit.I was wearing a hemet. And then the ole 300 kept going and hit a fence and scratched my plastic and broke my stock headlight.:o

Ricos right grip glue is the best.

That's not what Rico said Quadkid250ex.

"I've found that grip glue is a waste,,,never ever worked for me."

That's what Rico said, and I would agree, grip glue sucks.

all I use is some hand cleaner inside of the grip and some on the bars then they go right on and they stay on after they dry they have not came off yet...

Isn't that why there is a knob on the end? So your hand doesn't slip off?

I just went to the adult store, bought two rubber toys, hollowed them out, and slipped em on my handlebars!

Wasn't that guy who played in the movie, "SHAFT", named Richard Shaft?

When I put new grips on my new pro-taper bars I had the same problem. After talking to a friend, I tried his trick, spray paint. Take spray paint and paint the inside of the grip and the handle bar. It should slide on with relative ease, just be careful that you don't paint your machine.

Now remember this the next time you die hard wd-40 boys put wd on you're chain. Its slippery for awhile then it's gone!!!..

Back to the subject I have always had good luck sticking the end of the bar in liquid nitrogen for 5 minutes then sliding the grips on immediately after. The bars usually shrink about 10% from there original size and the grips go right on just dont get it on you're skin!.........ouch!:devil

I do the same thing, except I use spray paint instead of hairspray.

01-22-2002, 06:48 PM
just put a air hose under it and blow air under, which will make the grip expand and slip right on:D :D

The only thing that has worked for me is safety wire. When I was at he Little Sahara the guy at the shop put on a new set of grips with safety wire and they haven't moved yet. Just be sure to spray them down with some carb cleaner and let it dry, then use air to put them on.
Good grips help also, I have gone through several sets of Scott's and FMF 909's, I like these Renthals best of all. :D

I put some wd-40 or white lithium grease on the handle bar and the grip should go right on.

I have always found that using some starter fluid inside of the grip, flinging out the excess and making sure that the bar was nice and clean (also with starter fluid) made for a solid grip. Dries in about 5 minutes too so you are ready for the trail no matter what. Most of my grips just wear through to the bar before they ever loosen up. Hairspray I used to use back in the BMX days but they tend to loosen up on rainy or wet days which is no good. Ever have a grip pull off from the bar in a whoop section of a trail and end up in the trees..... Moral of the story, only *****es with tall hair should use AquaNet.... if you don't fit that category choose something else.

soapy water works well too.just be sure to let em dry.Use safety wire insteed of glue.
