I have checked the valve clearances over and over and the bike runs fine but there is an awful ticking noise coming from the engine. It has a sparks race cam with a decompression mechanism on it like the stocker. Could it be this? What could it be? I say Rico in the title to get you attention. You were able to help me before when noone else was, when I was missing my spring under decompression mechanism on the cam. Any ideas? I have had it apart several time and don't visually see anything. Also, it will SOMETIMES quit at idle or after riding for awhile.

no its not the decomplession mechanism (that spring and little dowel) when i dropped mine in the bottom end by accident and didnt know the engine would not start at all

So the ticking started after you put the cam in????

Contact Sparks and see what he has to say.. Might just be that aggressive came makin the rockers work extry hard..

No, it started about 3 months after the cam was put in. Itr was fine at first. curtis says it will tick due to the larger clearances, but I don't think it is suppose to be this loud????

You haven't used any of that silicone gasket stuff have you?

Yeah, on the base gasket. Do you think it got in an oil port and restricting the oil flow? thought about that also, but everytime I pull the valve cover off, it is full of oil. Oh yeah, this is on a 400EX, not my 450.

What clearances do you run? I put it back at stock clearances and it still did it. But...it was not near this loud when I first installed the piston and cam. It happened a few months later, AFTER AN OIL CHANGE, if that matters.

That is what happened to me a couple of months ago. Take the valve cover back off and check the rockers and cam for any wear.

ditto....

since the engine has been run for awhile an inspection of the parts would reveal whats going on in there

Beyer...........what type of oil are you using???

I noticed you said it started after an oil change.....

how old is your timimg chain? my ticking was from the chain being too loose.

Timing chain is the original and the oil is 10W40 Valvoline, before and after.

mine started ticking last weekend and my buddy said ride its supposed too do that -this weekend it got real loud so i tore it it down all 4 valves were hitting the piston

i have been running mine for 4 month the valves were in spec -the chain and tensioner are new -had new 11.1 89mm je piston the crank was new -and it didnt jump time -so im still tryin to figure out why after 4 month it started hitting

If you didnt get your rockers hardened......I bet you hear your rockers clacking on your cam..........I had this problem for a while, couldnt figure it out.

mine started making a loud clicking noise, checked my valve setting, it was ok, so i took my valve cover off to inspect, rockers looked ok, i noticed the cam chain had slack in it, i got a flashlight and look down the chain, i notice the chain tentioner wasnt extracted out, so i took it off and it wasnt working, put in a new one, put it back together and the clicking was gone.

I did have the rockers hardened. So what do I need to do to check the tensioner and chain? Should the chain be completely TIGHT or some play?

my brand new 400's chatter/tick turned out to be piston slap

Mine was ticking so i put the stock cam back in and the ticking sound got louder, that told me that the rocker arms were wore....so i put new rocker arms in and the ticking went away. You might want to try that.
