It was a great day for racing, and I had was having one of my best races ever until I tried to fit between two trees that were about 1" too narrow. I snapped a Tie-rod end and was done. I felt great and was running behind Smiley and Borich when it happened. Krachun soon found me sitting and sporstman like asked if I was OK because before his flat we had a good battle going. I am thankful that I get to race with such fast class act Pro Racers.

Man, I wished I could have Finished:mad:

thanks for the pics pappy. i didnt look to enthused there beacuse i had crashed on that lap and my pit crew was at the next turn with much needed water. borich did great on the yammi. he won his class but smiley took the overall. the pics dont justify the amt. of rock that the track had. man it was rough.

That's why Traci and I have not been up there for over 2 years!

You would easily bust up $150 - 300.00 per quad in skids or wheels / tires every race - and when you take 2 up there the damage only mulitiplys.

We fell victim to the rumors of newer & better tracks for the first two years they had harescrambles there (I think they do this to just get people to come back) - always the same track - always a ton of damage.

But then again - they really do not have the best conditions to work with either. The place is a rock garden plain and simple.

krachen did beat borich he and smiley were the only two that lapped me and it was right on the last ski slope. i waited fora bout 5 mins after the race to see who came out in what order. if i rember right it went like this.smiley, krachen, borich, lucas, hertz then i left.

Hey Jay,

Yup, Mike won the 4-stroke A class & technically the overall since he finished about 15 secs behind Matt.

Flats were a big problem for everyone. Mike had one on the 2nd lap which caused him to fall back about 2 minutes from Smiley & Borich. Harlen passed him while he was pitting. Then Chris got a flat too. Smiley was lucky with none. Lots of riders pitting with flats though, I think I saw Wes Stone pull in twice.

i pitted at the end of the first lap cause i heard a rattling. coming up the big hill the chain flew off and i coasted over the top. had to take the rear skid off. i was pretty far behind. took off the rear skid and went back out for the next 3 laps.

I had no flats with my RAZR's. any holeshot flats??? I like to think its cause i'm smooth but i think its cause i'm slow..hahaha

played on the mx track a bit afterwards, been a while since i left the ground on a quad. we had fun for a few minutes, i had to leave before i started getting stupid.

Ditto, he will be missed.

Great pictures Kenny (Pappy)!!! Thanks for taking them... And for Harlen auditing them! Glad to see you there! I wished you would have raced though!!! (I understand about your loyalty to Harlen:D , and the fact about your shocks.:( If it means anything, your atv "looks" great!!!:macho (It would look better with "Honda" red than the blueish color!!!!) JK.

I too will agree the race was a bit brutal on the body and the atv. Little dusty out there too. I was really surprised that I did not see Traci or Rick there, but now I understand. I was one of the fortunate ones that had no mishaps. My ITP's held up great as well as the rest of the machine. I really had a great time out there... And the people that were there were great! (LOL's Harlen about me singing).

I am really going to miss this type of racing, and the people that were there Sunday. Kenny (Racer101), Lou (Quad041), Joe (Exkid), Harlen (ZRacer) & his dad, Kenny (Pappy), Mike & Trish K (Propartsracing), Ralph (Ralph13), Jason (Even though I did not see him), Brian, Chris & Papa Borich are great people to be around.

Glad to witness Joe (exkid) do well out there. (He zipped past me within 10 minutes of the race... So much for my ego!):D Glad to see that Kenny (Racer101) survive on stock rear tires! Glad Ralph survived after having a hang over! Sorry to hear about Harlens mishap... But there was no need to cause Lou to go over the handlebars!!!!:D (Wish I was there to see that!)

Now if we can only get Lenny (440ex4me) out there!!! :D

Again, good seeing you guys out there, it was a blast!

Quad041 (Lou) scared me to death and when I yelled "Go Lou", then Wham!!!! He hit a tree and flew over the bars head first into the rocky track and his feet went over his head. I was saying "Oh My God!!!" what did I just do as I ran to check for a pulse. He got right back up, and I adjusted his quad off the tree and he was on his way again.

I guess he was in shocked to see me walking around when I was suppose to be racing:mad:

Did any of you guys talk to Borich about the YFZ450? Is he dialing it in for the rest of the GNCC season? maybe Pro P. next year? I guess the fact that he was hauling *** shows that the rumors of the yammi having no bottom end aren't accurate or can be easily fixed. I would hate to see yet another honda rider cross over to something else.

I heard Chris talking to Kenny (Racer101) and Lou (quad041) about the new Yamaha. Chris did say that he likes it. Kenny or Lou asked which he liked better, the Suzuki or the Yamaha? Chris replied that he likes both.

Note: This was before the race, before Chris had a chance to run the Yamaha with his new upgraded "Axis" suspension. Someone commented that Chris and the Yamaha rear was a bit bouncy at last weekends race (Back of the Mountain).

If it means anything, Chris stated that he is really interrested in riding whatever Honda comes out with.:)

jlhughes750

when it comes to GNCCs Chris is all business, and the way Chris will take care of that business is with the R. the D6's are for fun, sure there testing new rides but why not!!! I don't see Chris switching mid season, i personally don't think he'll switch at all till someone pays him.. The Borich's are a race bread family they run what wins, and they are serious about winning a GNCC title. I don't think he has an interest in Pro Prod.

Another A racer from sundays race said he followed Chris on the yami and now that he has the Axis on there it was unreal. he blasted right through the rocks and down the hill like it was paved.

BUT!!!!!!!! this is Chris Borich #4 we're talking about, the boy can haul arse on an lt80!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info guys. I agree that it wouldn't make sense to switch machines in the middle of a season. I think Borich has what it takes to de-throne Ballance. Borich and Derisi are the fastest "upcoming riders" out there in my humble opinion. I stopped racing the GNCCs back in 97 and now race the Mid East Harescramble series. The pros are just plain fast no matter what they are on. I considered it a privelige to be lapped by Hawk, Duvall, Kunle (spelled?)once, twice, three times in a race...lol. Hey, what ever happened to Kim Kunle?

The only switching that Chris did lately was trading the YFZ with Smileys 250R at Jack Frost - WHILE RACING!
I was talking to Joe -Chris's father today and he said both Chris and Smiley pulled over to switch rides for a few miles since they were pretty far out ahead during the race.

Derisi's one cool dude, but up and comer??? he's been doing it for a while and has just started wickin up lately. Borich is young, has not been racing for more than a few years, he's got a lot of life left in him. I've seen him a few times this year deep into a race and still on cue and battling with Ballance gear for gear, only to have something dumb happen, mudhole, tree relocation etc.

Eventually that stuff won't happen to him anymore, when that day comes the bar will be raised, and a new era will begin!!!

Hawk once said he felt like he was getting faster and faster, but had a string of wrecks and close calls with trees.Trying to push you self in the tight stuff to see where the breaking point was. Then all at once he won and the wrecks stopped,he figured it out and then went on to win 8 straight titles.

i kinda see it this way. as a racer you will reach a peak in your racing carrer. to some guys like barry hawk this was 8 gncc titles, for other guys it will be a three race win streak. so what im sayin is bill ballence is at the peak of his carrer and will proably wont be a big of a threat to the podium in the next year or two. chris on the other hand is a fresh racer who has alot to learn compared to someone like bill balence who has been riding the pro/a classes for years. and santo derisi was mentioed, maybe now is the peak of his racing carrer. im not trying to take anything away from bill ballence or santo or chirs. i give thoose guys all the credit in the world for making it so far and being so fast. im just trying to explain how i see it.

propartsracing
07-23-2003, 05:50 AM
Hey,

In my opinion, Bill Ballance still has alot more seasons left on the podium as well as Borich & Smiley. Billy has the confidence that he KNOWS he can win (as well as Borich & Smiley)... but that is hard to come by. It's alot easier to go out there & race when you have that kind of confidence. I don't think we'll be seeing Billy slow down any time soon... the competition will keep getting stiffer though as some racers will get up to his speed & challenge him for the title as Chris & Smiley both do every race.

As far as Hawk, he probably would have kept on winning titles in the ATV series, but he chose (as well as a little push from Yamaha who put him on salary) to give up the ATV racing & do strictly bikes & has never looked back. When Hawk quit is when we really began to see Billy shine.

ballance has alot of life left he be 27. You take look at Rodney Smith he be 37-38 he still winnen. The key be practicen and bike prep along with desire. Yo half to push push yourself beyond your limits to test the water. when you be gettin paid to do it ya tend to be faster

quadman21
07-24-2003, 01:01 AM
Joedirt, I must say i disagree with your theory of being faster because your getting paid for it. My prime example is motocross/supercross. Most of the young guns who are being paid tend to slow down. Not because they are slow, usually they get picked up because they are fast, but rather that they have already been paid! Once they recieve their contract and money their desire isn't quite what it used to be. Most of the desire to get to that point is gone because they accomplished what they set out to do...get a factory ride. I am not saying this is the case for all, but I see it a lot. A true hearted racer will be fast whether he/she is gatting paid or not. That is why I feel that we (atv riders) are very under appreciated. We got out there and race in a sport where there is little or no support. We go out there and race because we have heart and not to mention a fun time with our friends.

joedirt
07-24-2003, 03:16 PM
Racing is there job. When you look at mini racers the fast ones do you think they pay for those bike or there clothes or anything no they are sponsored them. When people reach a certain level to where they can get paid to race they are fast. When that is your job and that is all you have to think about you will get faster. So for you thinking that racers get slower when they do it for a living that is silly don't be silly, jackasses get slower!!

When you look at some of the names in motocross today, I just don't believe that they are riding as hard as they were when they were privateers and trying to be noticed. Some of the younger factory riders see that they have already been paid. So why push as hard?

I am not saying this is the case for all, but I see it a lot.

As I said, Not all riders do this. Case in point is Barry Hawk and Doug Henry. Barry was winning championships without being paid for it. Now that yammi sined him up for a contract, he never gave up. Now he is on his way to win a championship again. Doug Henry never let up either. After a broken back, then two broken wrists he came back to win the 250 outdoor championship. Barry and Doug never got fast becasue they got paid, they were fast to begin with. Ballance, Smiley, and Duvall all have full time jobs and do not get paid to be as fast as they are. My main point I am trying to make is that some of the young riders get blinded by factory contracts and money then loose sight of their own desire that got them there to start with.

joedirt
07-25-2003, 11:48 AM
Ballance might have a job and that is racing. he probably works on the farm to help out but he does his fair share of practicing. Yokley and him are sponsored by parts unlimited. they pay them did you ever here william spending a month or two in florida during the winter. I have a full time job and i'll be dammed if I can take off a month and go down florida and practice
