i will never ride on or build a wooden kicker again. i have just seen way too many break. i highly reccomend you DON'T build a wood kicker.

thanks for all the help guys but what are the steps for building a wood ramp or kicker and thats a nice kicker Jimmah how did you build that

Jimmah12
07-18-2003, 01:23 PM
Honestly, I just kinda eye balled that one. I haver a metal one I made all out in cad first but I can't use it at the moment. Go to my website, www.FMXQUADS.com and I have a pic section with tons of pics of me hitting it. Bare with the site I'm still building it.

Jimmah12

BTW, that jump was 4x5x8ft.

07-18-2003, 03:06 PM
crazy so 4ft tall by 5ft wide by 8ft long...
just curious how big of a gap you have it set at and how fast your hitting it.thanks for the info, i am changing my plans now. if i make it like yours i will have enough wood to make an eight footer for bikes only. are you happy with it being 4ft tall? i have been invited to a mud bog and one of the sponsors want me to bring a few guys along to put on a little show.we are going to make an all dirt jump and take the ramp that im building.i had planned on making it taller.

kxrider
07-18-2003, 03:17 PM
mine is 4ft tall, by 4ft wide, 9 ft long, and we can jump 35-40ft gap in 2nd on my kx,

Jimmah12
07-18-2003, 03:40 PM
It's a 40ft lip to lip gap. We clear about 45 though. I hit it in 3/4 throttle range in 3rd.

ive decided on building a 3 foot high jump so i bought some wood tonight 2x12x12 and some plywood but i still dont understand how to build it and how it should be setup can anyone help

kxrider
07-18-2003, 04:43 PM
na 40ft is if you land at the bottom of landin liek we usually do, and our landin has like a 4ft safe landing part, so if you case, you dont die:D

and exrider123, at least make your ramp 3ft tall so you can make a lil curve to it, you might be afraid at first but your gona want bigger soon, or o know i do:D

im finally building a wood ramp like jimmahs tommorow. me and my bud worked our arses off today gathering every inch of dirt we could break loose to make a decent landing. and tommorow morning we get the materials and start building have it done by the next day, and will start hittin it.

well me and my dad started construction on my ramp last night. it should last a long time the way it seems. all there is left to do is to add 2 more braces cover it with ply wood and paint it. it looks alot like jimmahs and i cant wait to hit it. ive got pics all through out the building stage that i will post when i use the rest of the film and get a pic cd. oh btw its four ft tall and eight long

i should have pics in about a week but yeah the frame was made all out of 2x4s, i just bought 10 8ft long 2x4s and had just enough but i actually used two more that i had laying around for the x brace in the back. but what you do is get 1 3/4 inch piece of ply wood and one 7/16 inch ply. you set the 3/4 up so that its 4 ft tall and eight foot long then take a piece of string and run it from the bottom corner to the top corner and attach with tape, then you pull the string so that you find the curve you like, trace the curve, use jigsaw to cut out, you then take the one you cut and lay it on the rest of the ply you didnt cut(there ought to be enough left to use) and trace it and cut so you have two identical sides. then you can build your frame around that. like i said ill get pics in a week or so.

with the gap set at 35-40ft we get 8-11ft high, and our landin is about 5ft tall, someone destroyed the crapy one i made so we brought the kicker to my friedns house, and set it up on the landin for his 60ft double, its perfect:D

How sturdy is your guy's ramp. does it wobble or move in anyway. or does it stay put pretty good and feel secure.

hessianmx you also helped me out...hopefully i can get one started this fall. How do you bend the plywood for the face of the jump? Do you have to do anything to it or does it just bend that way?

glad i can help what you do is attach the top of the ply to the top of th ramp first, you then get somebody to walk up it slowly so that it bends nice and smooth, and after they attach the next section just get the persone standing on the ramp to take a step back each time a new part of the ramp is nailed down,

:huh :huh  :huh :huh
i dont usually feel it its just my shox soak it all up but they are compressed all the way down when i land.

all that means is that he will get a sh@# load of pre-load, and go even higher, it will def be a super kicker ramp,

hey hessian, you are gona wanna put somethin over the face of your ramp, like i put 1/4 thick rubber over mine, becuase you will get abotu 10 jumpes before your tire eats throw it like a saw, so just put somethin on it before you jump becuase it will be worth it, just somethin to keep the tire off bare wood then youll be set, just make sure you dont endo cuse that things steep:D

hessianmx111
07-25-2003, 09:24 AM
alright ive been thinking about the curve of my ramp and have concluded that it is too steep so me and my dad cut a foot of it off height wise. so im just gonna use it like that until i take the time to build another four foot tall one with a less dramatic curve.

Jimmah12
07-25-2003, 09:58 AM
I personally don't think that is a bad curve.

yeah im going to build another one that is four foot tall, with a curve similar to yours jimmah. but for right now i dont have that good of a landing and this will have to do. i was worried that i was goin to endo

if i where you i would make it bigger. like 6ft tall if you want to go big.

hondarider27
08-07-2003, 08:59 PM
i would make the frame out of metal and bolt wood to it . then take some metal mesh stuff and bolt it to the wood so you can get grip with your tire and not slid around.

Jimmah12
08-08-2003, 02:13 AM
If your having trouble getting traction on wood I suggest getting some new tires. Not everyone has access to metal, a welder, ban saws, etc.... A wood jump is fine for a beginner.

I've heard of people putting carpet on top of theirs so they get more traction.

Jimmah12

At least 12ft...... And if your building it out of metal expect to spend a lot of money if you don't have a connection. I built this one and it cost me close to $600 bucks.
