View Full Version : Best street bike for me?

400grl

Hey - I've been kicking around the idea of a street bike for a little while, and was just wondering what you all would suggest for a good bike for me - 5'10" and 135 lbs.....I would like something sporty but not something that totally lays me down all over the gas tank.....something that is well balanced, handles well and has enough spunk to make it fun, but not so much that I wheelie every time I shift gears.....(thinking around the 600 range to start out). I hate Harleys and Choppers - I like R6's, etc. My top 3 manufacturer preferences are Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki........and I would buy used, so if you can throw a year in there, too - that would be great!

So.......whatchya think? :D

i've got a 96 Yamaha FZR 600 that sounds like what you're looking for. it's light, quick, economical, cool, and they don't cost alot. i paid $3500 for it 2 years ago and it had slightly over 5000 miles on it. check this out... www.fzrarchives.com

Good luck with whatever you pick Corry :bandit:

Here in Vegas the determining factor in buying a street bike is how much will it cost to insure. In Vegas State Farm and Allstate won't even insure a street bike unless it's a cruiser like a Harley or something big like that my brother in law has a CBR 600 and it costs him almost $450 to insure ( He's a dumb@$$ though he has gotten a few tickets). Our friend is 31 and he was lookin at a Hayabusa 1300 ?? I think and he couldn't get insurance on it and the dealer said he hasn't been able to sell any because no one can get insurance. Good luck on getting one that would be bad to see a chick do a wheelie down the street. If I ever get out of Vegas I'm gonna get one here I would get ran over in a heartbeat. The Suzuki is cool I like the blue one.

I don't think anyone is going to bash on a Yamaha street bike - that's a whole different ball game! I like the R6's, just hadn't heard anything about handling, etc.

We have a 1994 Ninja that's in pieces right now.....It's a 600....we are going to put it together and sell it, but I was thinking of learning on it real quick before we let it go......how is the handling on those things?

I'll check out the FZR's.....that sounds about right - something not brand new and not too expensive......

Corry, Stay away from the small Gixxer's. They tend to slide out if you get in the paint. Just way too light of a bike.

I had a 90 gsxr750, scary fast, light front end. My buds have Ninja 600's, very easy to drive not real fast though.

get yourself a ex250 or ex500

stay away from R6-cbrf4, gsxr600, ax-6r

or look at a sv650

or a fzr 600
So many people try to push you onto a new 600

there not slow, there just behind litre bikes

get yourself some gear and LEARN how to RIDE.

Bikes turn!

I had a 01' R6 and now I have a 96' FZr 600.

I put 1k miles on the R6 in the first week I had it. Almost 7k in a couple months.

I have more fun on the Fizzer then i did on the R6.

the R6 was faster yes but i am so much more in control of the FZR. I can whack the throttle on exit of a corner without worring about stepping out the rear.

the power is smooth and controllable.

I ride my buddies R6 now and he has a hard time keeping up with me on my Fizzer cause its too much for him

Donr be a SQUID and get something you can handle/learn on/wont kill yourself then step up to something

try Sportbikes.com alot of GODD info from people who KNOW!

NO the GSXR's don't slide anywhere. All the new 600's are great bikes.I say you would be more than happy with any of these new ones:Honda 600rr ,Yamaha R6,GSXR 600,and Kawi 636.If your looking at a few years old R6,F4iand GSXR [2001 and newer].are great bikes.

I'd go with the 600rr if you are going new.

Would you push a Quadzilla 500 on someone who has never ridden a quad before?

Put it this way

R6 will do 55 in first
100 in second
and 120 in third(Indicated)

Get something small and easy. If you dump it you wont kill the bank account and it will be forgiving.

why go new on a first bike? you dont even kno wwhat to look for.

would you give your daughter a vette for her 16th birthday?

the newer bikes do have more power than the older bikes but they handle way better than the old bikes everyone is talking about and stop much better
just ride with in your limits

I'll second this. I've seen a few friends go out and by brand new 'rockets.... first time riders......not very good results. One of them is totaled and the other one should have been totaled $5000 in damage.

It seems most people who wreck their bike is due to gravel on the road on a turn. Both bikes mentioned above wrecked this way... both guys knew the road well, but didnt know loose debris washed onto the road the day before.

Well - just to put things in perspective.....I'm 31, and not interested in showing off at all - just staying alive and enjoying the ride! :) I want my first bike to be a no brainer, so I can pay attention to the crazy people around me and stay out of their way..........

My first quad was a Warrior - two months later I sold it and got the 400......and was racing.

If I enjoy the whole streetbike thing, I will upgrade, but not until I'm comfortable on the road with what I have - which shouldn't take too long. But mostly, I want something within my comfort zone - less power is not a bad thing for me. Just less to worry about at the beginning. I can always step it up when I'm ready.

The ninja we have right now might be a great starter bike - I don't care if I lay that thing down - it might improve it's looks a little! :) ;) Scratch off some of that green paint! :D

J- I am on FZR archives too

sharp-

No stories. the R6 was my first bike.

I am a fairly good rider. I can ride 30-40 ft endoes. 120 mph third gear wheelies

Hell I can do 2nd gear stand ups on the cheesy fizzer.

by getting a new bike now she would be doing ONE thing. . POSING!!!!!

I never crashed although I have come close.

I was the same way once. t shirt and shorts wearing a helmet cause I had to. riding wheelies and endoes all over town

basically being a dumbass.

I see it all the time now. people get thes ebad *** bikes and they take corners at 25MPH!!! hahahahahhaha

I understand its s free country and all.

BUT I just dont want to see this chic hop on this new ride, dump it, get all f-ed and trash a bike.

There is so much more to bikes than the latest and greatest.

Sure you could learn a on a R1 but a smaller bke is going to show SO MUCH forgiveness compared to a litre bike or a new 600.

I know i sound like Iam preaching. I have had 15 or so machines(mostly dirtbikes) and after 15 years of riding(3 on the street)

i have learned a few things and they seem to still hold true

----------------------

Whatever you get just pick up some gear and use your HEAD!

Good luck

if i was you id go with the f4i(cbr 600 fuel injected) it has great handling pretty d*mn quick and doesnt like to lift up. the gsxr's are way too wide unless your a big person and you have to lay over the tank alot more. if this is your first bike you might like the r6 also but it tends to want to lift up more when you accually have to make the f4i lift up. just some thoughts. i can get some pics we have a f4i and a r6 in my shed right now so let me know

Corry,

You'd be fine on an R6 or any other 600 class sportbike for that matter I'm sure. It's rarely the bikes that get people in trouble, it's their little pea brains....lol.

I know girls that ride 900's and 1000's with no problems.

A buddy of mine just barely got an R6, and he had never been on a streetbike before. You could probably count the time he has ridden it on one hand and he's ready to step up to something bigger.

I'm going to be picking up an '01 F4i soon...hopefully I'll be able to go get it this weekend.

One other thing....GEAR....If you need some sweet deals on gear let me know and I can hook you up (no mods, this isn't advertising cause I'm not gonna make a penny). We are sponsored by www.speedrag.com and we can get some great prices on their stuff.

i was just saying that the r6 wants to lift the front wheel off the ground more than the f4i. the only thing with the f4i is with the feul injection the power is a light switch your either on the gas or off there no in the middle as soon as you let off the gas you should step on the brake slightly to get the brake lights on cause you slow down so fast just so people behind you know that your slowing down. its also a great handling bike

Oh sorry, I wasn't trying to make it sound like I was replying about your comment. There were just some people telling her not to get a fast bike, that's all.

Thanks for the info by the way...I'm anxious to ride the F4, but now that I hear what you just said I'm wondering if I coulda picked a better bike. It's not gonna be a daily driver, it's going to be for stunting...wheelies, stoppies, things like that. Wondering about the "light switch".....hmmmmm.

as far as a beginner 600cc bike a honda CBR f2, f3, or f4 would be your best bet the R6 is more race inspired so its not that comfortable of a ride unless your raceing on a track the ninja is the heaviest of the 600's i dont know much about the ninja or gsxr ive never really heard anything good of them

Go with a gixxer 600. If you're brave, step up to a GSXR750. You are pretty lightweight, so the 600 should be MORE than enough though. May only be 600cc, but the thing will still fly.

its a very light bike, easy to manhandle. accelerates pretty damn good, in the twisty open roads where i live it just seems to be a whole bunch of fun.

this bike will not get away from ya, yet has enough power to blast out of turns, very nimble.

Just get a trader go out looking , sit on the bikes and get a feel for yoursef. Dont let engine size worry you , the engine dosent get you its your right hand. I would not suggest a brand new or super clean bike because the odds are against you you will probably drop it (hopefully not wreck) just a slip in the driveway gravel even a light 600 leaned too far is hard to hold up. Not because this is a honda site but for reliability and a long lasting ride you cant beat a honda , my last bike was a 97 gsxr 750 and if i get another it will probably be a gsxr 1000. Whoa...hold on just a minute. There are other reasons for wanting to step up that have nothing to do with your ability to ride like a superbike racer Bro. News Flash - I'm sure you have your opinion on things, but not everybody thinks like you.

My friend wants more power and a bigger bike for other reasons, and if you want me to explain them clearly for you I will, just ask.

By the way, this isn't his situation, but if someobody wants to go out and buy a Gixxer 1000 and never get out of 2nd gear that's their choice and nobody has the right to criticise them. It doesn't automatically mean that they are buying it to look cool, or because they think it will make them an instant Aaron Yates.

On another point, we are talking about "Street Bikes" to be ridden on the "Street". If we are going by your theory NOBODY had the right to own even a 600cc machine because if you have to by a bike that you are going to ride at it's full potential then you are either gonna kill yourself of somebody else.

-Josh

YZROOSTINYA

I typically dont ride my bike on the "street".

I stay to the back roads of the mountains where I actually get to enjoy what the bike is capable of.

I understand what your saying and yes you do have the right to buy whatever you want.

I was just trying to possibly give a little insight as to what would "400exgrl" better.

She seems(at least I think?) as if she wants to LEARN how to ride and not just cruise. That being said, I was reccomending something that would provide possibly a better(read safer, more controlable) starting block for her to advance from.

and as far as buying a Gixxer 100 and staying in second gear, yes you could do this as many already do.

It s like buying a vette to go to the supermarket?

Like I said, I understand where your coming from and I don't want to be like a mother goose here.

But take a look back and read what alot of these people are saying

They are telling a person(whom which no one REALLY knows) to go out and but the latest and greatest. Thats a bit silly dont ya think?

If some 12 yr old kid came on here and said he wanted to ride pop-o-wheelies and be the next Tim Farr woul dyou encourage him to buy a banshee or get a 250ex?

Thats all I am trying to say.

Start small and work your way up. I have seen your pics and you do some insane stuff. BUT that is YOU. 99% of the people on this world have nowhere near that kind of talent and suggesting a EXTREMELY high performance machine to someone who we hardly know is rediculous.

My first bike was a R6. I wanted a R1 but I couldn't afford it. I am a decen rider(even before i bought the R6) and I should have died so many times it is unreal.

99% of those were caused by me wanting to be on the latest and greatest and look cool.

I have taken a step back and I just would like to see 400GRL enjoy her first bike and hopefully continue with it throughout the years.

sorry if I came off strong, just my 2 cents
