OK, I am gunna be racing MX next year, I was considering putting in a 416 into my 400ex. But now that I have been thinking, I was wondering if I would be better off with an R. Also 2-stroke motors are WAY cheaper to mod. SOOO for MX and a bit of trail ( once a month) what should I do, start saving for the R or keep the 400ex and mod the motor. I have always wanted an R and I always like the 2-stroke power of dirtbikes. Please give me your advice.

If mx is your main use for it i would get the r. I had both and i kept the 400 because of its easy power, but i sure do miss the 2 stroke type.

This comes down to personal preference...take me for example...theres no way I would trade my EX for an R. I love 4 strokes. Besides that, you already got a 400ex....keep it and mod it...

damn this decision has really got me stumped. The plus side I am happy about with the R is that motor work is WAY cheaper, not so many parts, but I guess you have to do way more top end rebuilds. I guess if I dont like the R, I could sell it and buy the new Honda that comes out.... because I have a feeling the market value for a 400ex is going to drop like a stone, when it comes out!

Well what I am planning to do is. I dont own my 400ex my dad does. I am currently paying it off (so I could race it) But I guess what I could do is buy an R if I totally hate it, I could sell it and go on my way with the 400ex.

Also I wont be buying an R until the fall so I still have some time to decide. I also have to save up the money.

i wouldnt do either id buy a z 400 or yfz , there new and faster...the 250r motor is more competitive than the ex but think about all the headaches, top end need to be kept up with and the trannies, its a old motor plus there resale is going down, time of the 250r is over, if you cant afford to buy a yfz or a z id just mod the ex, motor may be less competitive but i love the handling and low maintence, think about the money youd spend maintaing the r motor , you could mod your ex out ....i dunno but i wouldnt buy a 250r...:ermm: just my 2 cents

I dont know why so many people say you have to keep on the top end of an R for rebuilds, i had mine for at least 2 or 3 years and when i sold it it still had excellent compression and could smoke any 400 or any other R for that matter,.. i never had to touch the engine for any kind of rebuild. She worked awsome and never left me stranded:cool:

07-17-2003, 04:19 AM
depends how hard you ride it ....under race conditions top end rebuild become more frequently needed

Well I think I might run the R for a while until it cant keep up in competition anymore ( LOL if that ever happens) Then when the new Honda quads get on the market for resale ( after they have been out for like 3 years, I will just buy one of them. :blah: How much would you say my 400ex is worth ??? My mods are in my sig.

Oh ya, one more thing, Will any of the parts I have in my Sig fit an R ??

That's like saying the time of the Banshee for hillshooting is over, or that Mustangs are outdated, or that V8 engines are a thing of the past. I'm not talking about "classics" or nostalgia, the R is still a proven race-winner.

Damn prices in NY must be low, because thats what stock 400exs go for around here. You cant find even 99's for that cheap around here.

I would keep the shocks off of your 400, they will fit. The bumper should fit too. I haven't had my r long enough to need it , but the guys I ride with all have r's, and they all go nearly 2 years without needing a rebuild. And it doesn't cost nearly as much as rebiulding the top end of a four stroke. They are also every bit as reliable as my 400ex.

So my shocks and my bumper should fit ? I was told I have to grind down the bushings to make it fit, I dont really wanna do that. I might sell the Elkas with my quad for the right price, because I wanna put some PEPs on it. I dont really like the look of piggybacks on R's, I wonder how much it costs to switch from piggyback to remote rezzies.

Will the steering dampner fit on an R.. looks like it might.

I wonder if my pro-pegs will ?

iv had both. stay with the ex. why go back to something thats already 14+ years old? the 250rs are nice but 4-strokes are the way of the future. just my 3 cents.

derek

My friend put a set of stock 400ex shocks on his r, they bolted up no problem. the rear has to have a remote res to work. I don't think the pro pegs will work because they have different bolt patterns for the pegs. I was gonna switch the pro pegs from my 89 r with the pegs from my 400, they didn't match up though. If you really want to change shocks, I would sell them on ebay.

yup

and 250rs ARE NOT as reliable, also a 250r you should be changing the rings every 15-20 hrs if that long and changin the piston every 2 times u do the rings i got 3 seasons out of my top end and all i was going to replace was rings and they werent worn but i decided to go with a 416 kit , also cranks trannies and top ends dont wear on a ex like the r , keep in mine how old the R is

it doesnt matter maybe you can get 33-3500 with shocks

I am just tired of the 400ex's power, and its gunna cost me too much money ( in my opinion) to make it race worthy. With an R I can mod it cheaper, and sell it in 2-3 years and get out what I paid, cause the price wont drop that much. The price of a 400ex is gunna drop huge, when that honda quad comes out most of you guys will be selling your 400ex's and I will walk in the dealer and be like BLING BLING 450 baby.

:D very wel said.. IMO 4 stroeks are gutless.. no flame, but you dont know the meaning of acceleration:o

07-17-2003, 05:11 PM
4 strokes are decpetively fast, 2 strokes feel fast in 1st gear, and when the new honda comes out the 250r resale will drop alot too, if you havent been paying attention the resale of the 250r is getting lower and there harder to sell..keep in mind hard hitting power tires you out quicker than smooth delivery...

to each is his own i guess

the only thing about my 250R that tires me out is smoking all these new 4 strokes on stock suspension..:o

nah but in all honesty it does take more out of you.. but the rush is sooooo oo worth it.. i forget who said it, but basically yeah get the 4 stroke if you want a Lazy power .. i wont say powerband.. well cause im still not convinced 4 strokes have one.. its more like just rolling momentum.. lol:D
