now that i'm getting a hood scoop and removing the lights I want to get rid of the stock light switches, I have heard people wiring in a dirt bike kill switch as a starter button to their quad

is this easy to do? I haven't opened up the stock assembly to see what the wires look like, are there just 2 wires that go to the start button, and would the dirt bike kill work as a starter?

thanks in advance

I would also like to do this. For some reason I remember someone saying only the YZ switches will work. I could be wrong though, it was a while ago when I read about it.

It's easy enough, I have a CR250R switch on mine. I can't get into detail on it as I did this a yr ago but it was straight forward. Only thing YOU NEED TO REMEMBER is that it can't touch metal so throw a strip of electrical tape around the handle bars where you plan to put it so it doesn't short out. Other all you need to do is find the positive and negative wire in the strat switch area and wire them to the button.

I have a question though, does the switch act like a starter and a kill switch? Or do you guys just turn the key to kill the bike?

all it is is a button, u push it and it turns over the motor, u still need a kill switch and a key, but when people get hoods they font have lights anymore, and most also have thether kill switches so the big starter assembly can be removed and replaced with the killswitch

You can just forget a kill switch though and just use the modified starter switch to start the bike and the key to shut it off? Will that work.

Ive done this with a YZ250 killswitch on my 400ex. Its been working really good so far. I cut all of the old light switch wires off down near where it plugs into the wiring harness to get rid off the switch completly (because mine was smashed up) but left the extra wire incase I ever wanted to hook it back up. I have a PEP ez pull clutch lever and perch so when I had the stock switch hooked up I just wired the two wires together so I could start it in gear. But since I cut all of those wires off I could no longer start it in gear. If you run into this problem, if you hooked the killswitch up the same way as me and cut the stock switch off completly down where it plugs in to the wiring harness all you need to do is ground the yellow wire with the green stripe and you can start it in gear again.

if u use a yz kill switch you dont have to worry about shorting it out cause its a 2 wire switch.
it will work fine.

I think that I paid $23 for my YZ250 killswitch. I know that Baldwin use to sell starter buttons but im not sure what they were like.

I did mine today. Used a 02 CR250 Switch, cut off all the wires to the headlights and the clutch kill switch was taped together and I just taped and taped wicked tight at the main harness that goes and clips in, so all the wires are still there just really short. It works good too. I will get a pic when I get my camera back.
