I would check to see if the 2 wires at the clutch are together. If not this will cause the 400 to not start in gear. The previus owner might not have put the 2 wire together when he changed the stock clutch lever.

2 wires will be on the handle bars by the clutch lever... tape them together and it will start in gear... just make sure u have ur clutch in when u hit the start button or the quad will jump ward bc its in gear;)

there is a small black box on the clutch perch. (stock clutch lever) this is where these 2 wires go. there is a sensor on the box that the clutch lever hits when pulled in...enabling it to start in gear...take the small box out(held on by a small phillips screw.) and clean off the sensor\button. also clean off the clutch lever where its hittin the button. it will now start in any gear, provided the clutch is pulled in.

You can cut and splice them but you can just lock the two together and just tape them up and it will start in gear.
