View Full Version : Best wheelie bike?

What's up guys? I haven't been around in a while, I sold my 250EX and my 250R and had to buy a new car. Anyways, I loved the 250EX for the wheelies, as some of you guys might know how they wheelie. So now I'm in the market for another bike, but I'm gonna buy used. Out of ANY make and model, what do you guys think would make a great stunt quad (for wheelies). I will rarely ride in the trails or pits, as mASSachusetts is getting stupid w/ ATV laws. So I figure if I'm gonna get busted, I might as well wheelie the streets. At this point I don't care. I also got picked up by a motorcycle stunt team who let me show off on one of their bikes. I toyed with the idea of a Suzuki LT250R or an older Banshee. I need something that will carry my fat butt in nice long wheelies. I'm not into top speed or handling, just straight up torque. How are blasters? I've never riden one and never wanted to, but they are cheap. Anybody with a bike that has good OR bad "wheelie reviews", please post them here. Also let me know if your "wheelie review bike" was modded in any way and the year. I am mechanically inclined so reliabilty/maintenence isn't priority #1. I appreciate all the help and info. ~Robbie

400ex is the best by far imo. The new yzf sucks for wheelies imo, the raptor tends to get boggy on a wheelie imo, banshees are hard to keep in the balance point and require you to be ready to hit the brakes constantly.

Well, I got a 2000 400EX, 1998 300EX, and a 2003 250EX here at my house. I ride them all, and for wheelies......I like the 300EX best. The 250EX is a little down on power and harder to shift smooth. The 400EX is fine, but the 300EX seems to balanace a bit better, bit more forgiving. BTW I can go through all the gears on the back wheels on each of the machines, so it isn't a matter on not being able to ride better on one than another, just which is it easier to do it on. Anything you pick (As long as it is a Honda 4stroke  ) will be just fine. Just my 2 cents.

Only quad I've ever wheelied with was an '03 stock 300ex. i've only had the bike for about a week, but i can do great wheelies standing on the grab bar. If you just wanna do wheelies, go with the 300ex over the 400ex. No reason to spend all that extra money if you're not gonna use the extra power.

1.400ex
2.300ex
3.250ex

in that order, have ridden them all. the 250 is easy but it takes finess to wheelie for a long time. it just doesnt have the power.

07-12-2003, 09:53 AM
i think you would like a 400ex with a 14tooth sprocket a lot.

1984 Suzuki LT 185.....the wheelie king of them all:D i just have to rejet it and it will be back to it's normal beastiness...lmao, seriously though, second gear you can wheelie like nothing and keep it going for as long as you want:cool:

and banshee's do suck for finding a balance point....

but i'd say either an LT185 or 400ex...haven't ridden a 300ex, but i've ridden a 250ex and there's no power at all in those things....more power in my 185....

i would say a blaster. reall cheap and they are easy to wheelie. i can wheelie an blaster i have ever ridden(thats quite a few). my 400ex is almost as easy as a blaster and a 300ex is probably tied with a blaster.

Out of the quads (and some 3 wheeelers) I've ridden, this is my top 5

1. 300ex
2. Honda 350x
3. Honda 200x
4. Blaster
5. 400ex

I know some of you will say "WTF how come the 400 is at the bottom?!" well I mostly ride on gravel roads the 400 actually has too much power, it just spins the tires and the front rarely comes up. But when it does...ride em all day long. But you gotta love three wheels for wheelies:blah:

Keep the opinions coming guys, they're much appreciated. And fast250ex... I can ride a 2rd gear wheelie BACKWARDS on a 250ex. I can do em standing on the pegs backwards going about 20 MPH and yes, I have fallen and it sux. Try that, LOL... JK... But nice highchair wheelie though.

We rock the 400's....The 250 and 300ex might be as good or better wheelie quads, the 400 is overall the best (wheelies, power, MX, Jumping).

Just my thoughts.

Haha, I have tried the backwards wheelie annd that takes a lot of coordination. I got confused and was used to using my right hand for throttle and instead of hitting the throttle, I hit the starter button, lol.:D

Yeah, I hear ya....when I was learning them I was in a pretty small area (on a bridge...lol), so when I would do one and go to turn around I'd turn in the wrong direction.

Switchback stoppies are confusing too...I'm always grabbing the brake before the clutch.

The 300 is the best just for wheelies. Its easier to balance than the 400. The 400 is just easier to keep up if u cant balance:huh

Ok, let me put it this way... If you were getting a bike JUST to wheelie and beat the sh*t out of it, what would you get. Picture stunting this bike and not caring about looks, overall speed, or handling. Just function or wheelies. What I get will end up with an ugly 12 O'clock wheelie bar, and thats about it (why pay for extra crap just to thrash em??). I am going to also ask this question, and anyone who really knows answer. How are the Blaster and LT250/LT230 for wheelies?? LOL... I am curious about these cuz the more I look, the cheaper I find em. Would I love to have a 400EX?? Of course, but not just to beat on. It's too good of a bike to just beat on, unless you got that kinda money to throw around and I don't. So, for the money (about $2000 or less), whats the best bike. Like I said before, reliabilty and maint. aren't a factor. I just want a bike to throw around for the time being. Next year brings a brand new quad when I pay off my motorcycle loan... So until then and for $2000 or less, what do you recomend??

JLanphear
07-14-2003, 05:50 PM
Well, basically all i use my quad for at the moment is what you just described. I picked the 400ex for a lot of reasons. Gonna be really hard to find one in your price range though. In that case I'd probably go with a 300ex or a Warrior. Blasters are cool little quads, but they got the worst rap out of all mentioned for being "beginner" quads or whatever. I don't mean to insult anybody...I personally like Blasters and think they are the best bang for the buck quad out there.

Anyway, just my opinion

By the way...what crew you gonna be riding with? Feel free to hit me on on AIM... JoshCVBz or on MSN Messanger, machlanphear@hotmail.com .

If you are just gonna wheelie and thrash on something, get a Honda 3 wheeler. They are just incredibly fun and very easy to wheelie on. Even the small 125's wheelie at the wick of the throttle. Some don't even have suspension and are VERY cheap. You get get a nice 3-wheeler for around 1000 bucks. My first ATV was a Honda ATC125M and I wish I still had that to fart around on.

If wheelying and thrashing is your goal, a 3 wheeler is the best choice. It wheelies easy like a dirtbike but is is stavle during wheelies like a quad.;)

how could the raptor get 2nd? I dunno if it was just the one I was riding but when I was riding wheelies and would have em' real steep the thing just wanted to die. Honestly I think 4 strokes are the way to go for wheelies and I gotta go with jlanphear with the warrior or 300ex/250x.

Yeah, I loved that thing. It was always there just to mess with and have a ball on. I wouldn't want it as my main ATV or anything but it is fun, lets you get back to the roots of ATVing and focus on fun rather than speed. Mine was an '83 I believe

My uncle actually has it in his barn so I went and checked the condition. The tires are flat and it was smaller than I remembered. I started on that thing when I was 4 years old, lol. It has that huge rear grab bar on it. Man I wish it was still running. It would need a lot of restoring. I couldn't figure out how to start it at first. I didn't see anything but I finally found a frayed pullstart cord. I may take that as a project one of these to restore it.

Anyway, I have been rambling on too much.

I still say Honda 3 wheelers are the best to wheelie with. Really, any Honda sport quad (as long as its 4 stroke, 2 strokes are too unpredictable) wheelies great. I have never rode a Warrior so I can't vouch for that but I would still go with a Honda, you don't wanna thrash a Yamaha unless you want it thrashing back... to your wallet. :D

I think 400ex is realy good instead of lt250r, the suz need some skills to be keep a long time. I have one and I do some big wheelie but its very hard compare to the 400ex.. But my Suz Smoke it up.. lol joke I think you have to go on 4stroke to have a realy good wheelie quad 'cause they have a lot of tork and traction

If you plan on riding strictly wheelies, which is kinda odd to me :huh , the 400ex is great for wheeling. I've had some seat time on a few machines and either the 400ex or ltz/kfx400 are the easiest. The ltz/kfx400's pop up easier but are harder to balance out then a 400ex. The power on a 400ex is much smoother.

You can buy used 400ex's very cheap these days.....

Good luck.

well i dunno bout u other guys but i set a personal record on my 250ex and rode a sit-down wheelie for 1 1/4 th of a mile. not only that, i had a wheelie contest with a 300ex and 400ex and beat the 400ex by about 50-60ft and the 300ex by about 40ft, but thats only because it was a 300ft open field and I ran outta room(if i didnt stop I wouldve hit a 5ft tall ditch)and I did that when my baby was bone stock

Ok, do you have the picture uploaded onto the computer yet? If you do, when Ben gets all this picture stuff lined out, you will be able to go down in the area you would write up a post and find that image, and open on here so everyone can see it.

Or you could upload it to a webhost and do a bit of copying and pasting but just wait for Ben to fix everything, it is easier using the forums to upload pics.

Im really a fan of the LTZ/KFX's for wheelies, they definitley have a lighter feeling front end then an EX and also there trannies have spot on gearing for riding nice long ones, The 400ex is an excellent choice for wheelieing too though i used to have one with some nice 18" razr mx's that i could wheelie like there was no tomorrow.

It was a ***** to put on too. It cost bout $50 to refill it.and i dont give a rats *** if u belive me or not, it has to race in the 300-350 fourstroke class, which in-case u couldnt tell is 50-100cc more than where my 250 should be racin. id prove it if my camera worked the way its suppost to.

Look man, its like this. Find you a good deal on somthing. BUY IT! Some of you may be right about a quad being able to whellie better than another. But whatever you get, once you get the hang of it you can ride a whellie as far as you want! My neighbor has a foreman ES and he can ride one as good as I can on my 400ex. I can promise no matter what you get, you will find a way to do a whellie, and yes, it will feel like the bike can whellie awesome but its actually the rider!! :p
