I was wondering what kind of oil you use? I have a 400ex and have been using Valvoline Motorcycle 20w-50 but I heard alot of people were using Mobil 1 15w-50 synthetic.

I have used the Mobil1 15W50 synthetic, but I am using the Mobil1 20W50 non-synthetic right now.

Mobil1 15w50 full synthetic (Red cap) is good stuff. Unlike most car oils, it has no friction modifiers that make your clutch slip. As with all high viscosity oils, be sure to warm up your motor before operating at high RPM's.

GN-4 10W-40 for me. The dude at my dealership said NOT to use synthetic. I asked him about Mobile 1, and he said not to. I don't think he knows what he is talking about though, because a lot of people on here use it, and seem to like it. I think next time I change my oil, I am gonna spend the extra $ and get Mobile 1.

I have seen many of clutches come out of 400ex's which had used synthetic oil and the clutch will start to slip, and when you take it out you will find the discs glazed very bad and the pressure plate all overheated and colored blue from heat.
The best oil is Honda GN-4 10w40

Honda GN -4 10w 40.

I am looking to go to the Honda hp 4 10w 40

I think IF the mobil 1 15w 50 was that hard on clutches there would be more negative feedback on this site. I would be willing to bet that there is just as many people using the mobil 1 15w 50 than there is using the honda gn4 10w 40. Every time this oil question pops up it seems there are a he!! of allot of people running mobil 1 15w 50 full synthetic oil. Just a thought ;)

Used Honda GN4 20w-50 for first 50 hrs.. Then used Amsoil full synthetic 10w-40 motorcycle oil since.

I don't believe the clutch burning stories the dealerships tell. A good friend of mine works as a Race Team Manager said for me to run Synthetics as long as they are the motorcycle type oils. He also told me Mobil makes Honda HP4 synthetic blend for Honda, which is a reccomended oil in the Honda service manual.

You can also tell if your not getting positive clutch action, or should be able to. If don't grab hard, you got a problem.

I have been using Mobil 1 15w 50 and it was fine. But my clutch started slipping. After I get a new clutch kit, should I go back to the Honda stuff? Or can I even?

Check this link out. http://members.cox.net/gadget/oils4.htm
It tells of an article in Motorcycle Consumer News about the results of a test between motorcycle-specific and non-motorcycle-specific oils. Mobil 1 outperformed all the other oils in viscosity breakdown and there were no instances of clutch failure.

The hp4 is a synthetic blend oil. The gn 4 is not. You should not mix them

After a Very thorough break in, I will not run anything but a full synthetic in my air cooled motor, simply for the fact that these motors see lots of heat and oil breakdown costs $$$. I'd use Mobil if I couldn't get any Amsoil for some reason.

I'm using Castrol 10w-30 for break-in, and I may switch to a synthetic blend down the road because of the increased resistance to thermal breakdown. I think the two MOST important things to make sure of is to use a quality motor oil that meets or exceeds the manufacturer's specs (SF/SG in this case, I think), and to change the oil OFTEN. Brand names seem to be more of a preference than anything else.

Definitly use dino oil for break in.

One thing I found in oil research was cheaper auto oils like Penzoil, Q-State have parifin in their base known to sludge. The ratings can be mis-leading, somehow bunk oil can have a decent grade spec. Castrol is top dog of the dyno oils, if you change your oil often it saves money over synths changed on the same schedule.

I just switched to Castrol Actevo 20w 50. It is a premium oil from Castrol so it should last awhile. I noticed it ran smoother with the Castrol in it compared to the Valvoline I was using before. So I would recommand this oil to everybody with a 400.

If you are skeptical about using Mobil 1 15w50 because it is an automotive oil or because it is a synthetic you should read this.

Mobil 1 here - I did however just have to replace my clutch, but my bike is a 99 and it was the stock clutch. Put Mobil 1 right back in after the clutch change and all is good so far...
