Well I am looking for a reliable kit that runs hard but is also user friendly in the trails. I also was down at the sand dunes and there was two bikes built exactly the same except one was ported and had a cam and the other was stock cam and port, and the one that was stock kicked the other ones butt, Any suggestions would be great!!!!

I'm in the same boat, and I still havn't decided yet. But the majority of people tell me go for the 426, cam, port, carb, fullsystem.

I say go for a 426. I got a kit, carb, hotcams stage 2, and am going to get portwork done. I think it should wake the 400 up some once it is installed:)

A carb and good porting seem to make the most difference. A buddy of mine and I both had roughly the same combo's except that his head was ported and he had a 39mm FCR. The difference in performance was that my 416 got raped by my piped Raptor and his was a dead-heat with my piped Raptor.

Who makes the 426 Kit?

His a 416 also right? I didnt think a carb, portwork, and a 416 kit with a cam could keep up with a raptor:ermm:

Well....what I'm running is in my signature, and it made huge improvements for a little amount of money. I put a severe ***-whoop'n on a V-force yesterday. That same bike would walk all over me before ther piston and cam. I'll be down at Horsfall the 11th to the 14th, and I'll be able to compare it to stock raptors, piped raptors, z400's, and a predator. But, I was faster than the z400 rider in the group before the modifications. All it really takes is a bump in your compression, a cam, and the right jetting in your carb. I was on the dirt and sand yesterday, and the bike just fealt really good all day.

The dunes are pretty hard on the motor so I would think the 426 is not a good choice because of the thinner cylinder wall.....Maybe...maybe not:confused:
Is that something to consider? I really don't know...

His was actually a 440. But my 416 had more compression and a slightly bigger cam. My 416 has beaten plenty of milder cammed 440's with stock heads.

I'm all honesty I wouldn't choose a 400ex for a dune quad but if thats what you got I'd get a big bore (and stroke it if you have the $$), increase the compression, port it, cam it, get a bigger carb, full exhaust, etc. For a 400 I don't know if i'd port it for topend or just midrange since they are more of a torque motor compared to a 2 stroke.

Thanks for your honesty, I wouldn't either but i have had it for 4 years and when i bought it, I wanted a 4 stoke, and well that's what there was. Thanks for your opinion, I think I will go a 440 with XR400 cam and a port job and bigger valves. How about carb's, what carbs are you guys running in your 400's

You'll be very disappointed with the XR400 cam in the dunes. It is barely bigger than the 400EX cam. I had one in mine for 2 months. It wasn't noticeably quicker than the stock cam. I'd recommend a Stage 2 Hot Cam if you're doing porting and valves along with a big bore. My 416 with only a Stage 2 and a Ross piston, no porting with stock valves, was fast enough on Olds hill to take out most stock Raptors and Banshees. And all piped LTZ400's.

Save your money on the bigger valves and go with a more aggressive cam. When you have it down do a valve job (three angle) and new seals. If you want the reliablity of a honda cam go with a HRC cam. Honda's racing cam for the xr / trx 400 motor. Close to the specs of the stage 2 hot cam.

ok I will look into the HRC Cam, and the stage two, thanks for all of the help
