the oil smoke puffing is your valve seals, they are worn i have senn tons of ex's with that prob, including mine.

these 400ex's are somewhat known to use a bit of oil. i had a problem with mine doing that when it was brand spanking new. you would never see it but you would notice it was a little low after a hard ride or two. many people had problems with the honda oil doing this. after i got my bike broke in, i changed to mobil 1 15w-50 and i have not had a problem since. if your burning oil, changing brands of oil is not going to be a fix though.

mine use to burn a bit of oil when i was using mineral oil... so i switch to synthetic( my dad is a mechanic and swears by this stuff, every car, truck, bike etc... we use synthetic) and since then never burns a drop.... i race mx as well... i run castrol synthec 5w 50 or kendal full synthetic 5w 50...

i suggust those 2 oils or red line is also a great oil to use...

also if you have ever over filled your ex with oil, you more likely have over pressuresed your oil system and blown a valve seal... so that is another cause... check those out and you should be good...

i bought my 400ex used so i dont know if the guy ever overfilled it or not. i myself have never overfilled it. i looked up the type of oil suggested in the owners manual and it say 10w-30 for tempatures between like 10-80 degrees. it been about 90 degrees around here for the last month so im goin to switch to 10w40 and see if that helps.
