i think 86 anfd 87 have the short rod design and the 88 and 89 have the long rod design so i think this would work for an 86

Nope, 85 and 86 have short rod. 87-89 has a longer rod.

The top end in the 85 atc was the same as the 86 trx....I am almost positive. To answer your question 330ex....Yes you would need a 87-89 legnth rod.

hey everyone is wrong...that cylinder works with an 86 bottom end...if u have an 88-89 i also have a spacer plate for sale

ok here it is just to clear it up:
86 short rod...half moon piston(on bottom)
87 short rod window piston
88-89 long rod window piston

300ex u want it?

You wouldn't need a longer rod. The short rod (85-86) motor rod with 85-86 piston will work on with no need for a spacer plate for the cylinder. The 86 style piston can be run with 87-89 motor using a spacer plate so you can bore the cylinder to .120 over. You can use any style of cylinder on 86-89 motor its just the difference in the intake and exhaust ports being different.

87-89 motor have long rod, pistons only made up to .080
85-86 motor short rod, pistons only made to .120
So many people run the 87-89 motors with 85-86 style piston for more bores and the only thing the need extra is a spacer plate to compensate for the longer piston used in the 85-86 . I hope that helped you guys under stand a little about the TRX250R motors.
