I just bought a Recon and noticed there is a 1/4 " (side to side play) in the rear if you grab the wheel and push and pull in and out. I tried tightening the rear axle nuts but that wasnt it. I ran out of threads. What is this and how do I fix? Its not like bad bearings with all around slop, its like it needs more washers against the inside lock nut to hold the side to side play. Its like a loose axle nut but if I add washers, I dont see what they will be locking against. All I see is the seal. The steel collar is 1/2" inside. Thanks for any help.

I would guess that you need bearing and if it does have a center tube it it worn. If you have any movement the bearing are bad.

there are 2 bearings and 2 seals in that rear end, basically like 300ex-400ex, change the gear oil while you have it apart

It's NOTHING like a 300ex-400ex! The gear oil has nothing to do with the axle either.

Changing the bearings in a recon,300 fourtrax 350 fourtrax etc., is A LOT like changing bearings on a 300ex or 400ex, try it before you speak about something you have never done, as for the gear oil where do the think the metal from the worn bearings went?

I think you need to take your own advice Jack*****. I HAVE done it before and if you ever had you'd know the axle doesn't run in oil. Do you even know how many bearings are in there?

OK MR. KNOW IT ALL, where in my post does it say the axle run's in oil? I have replaced bearings in many of these rear ends, from 250sx 3-wheelers up, replaced ring and pinion gears in several also, if you have the mechanical ability too replace the bearings in a 300 or 400, you can replace them in a recon or any other quad with a drive shaft, the rear-end oil should be changed about as often as the engine oil, depending on riding conditions

There are more than two bearings and two seals in there and if the 'axle' bearings go bad there's no way metal from the worn bearings can get into the gear oil.
