I have a 2001 400ex with a FMF Power Core IV pipe, and everything else i stock. I would like some ideas on how to get more power out of it. I have a buddy that rides a 03 Suzuki Z400 and I can not beat him. I can pull him through 1st and 2nd gear, but after that he gets me alittle. I was just needing a little help on some cheap or inexpensive mods i can do to make it run aliitle better.

for starters a high flow air filter like K&N or uni. that about 30 bucks. a jet kit for more flow of fuel. im not to sure on chain systems and how they are set up and how guys use bigger chains and stuff to make them go faster. all cheap things to add more hp.

get a k&n filter and jet kit. Jet so you can run with your box lid off. If you are looking for more top end, go with a 16t front sprocket, and 22 inch rear tires. Theres not a lot more that I can think of, unless you want to start spending a lot of $. Go on a diet maybe and lose some weight. You might gain 1-2 mph:blah:

One (free) thing to check is that your throtle is opening all the way, when we got ours it wasn't. Pull the airbox off and have someone move the throtle while you are looking into the carb throat. If the carb does not open all the way adjust the cable.

If you go to a bigger front sprocket to gain on the top end, you might end up losing enough bottom end so that he beats you everywhere.

My son does some drag racing and we went with a smaller 14t front. In a normal drag race he never sees the top of fifth gear anyway.

the question IS, where do you want to beat him...in a strait line or on a track?! If you want the strait line nonsence, you are going to have to work the motor. Bud88 was right on with cheap mods. If you want to burn him on the track (where it REALLY counts), forget the motor, work on suspension! You would be surprised how mush faster YOU CAN RIDE if you can control the machine better. Look on ebay for some shocks. You can find a set of Works for 300ish. Works aren't the best, but they are an entry level race shock...and ALOT better than the stock front pogo's
