View Full Version : What could be causing the chain to get loose

What could be causing the chain on my sons friends 1991 250x to keep getting loose? It gets loose after only a few minutes of riding.

how old is the chain? if its seen better days its possibly that or the bearing carrier bolts are stretched and arent holding enough clamping force on the carrier to keep it from moving.

Is it a brand new chain? I had to adjust mine about 5 times within the first 30 mins of riding.

The bearing carrier bolts are new and the chain is pretty new also. Any other suggestions? The axle nut also keeps coming loose.

I'd scratch a small line in the bearing carrier and the swingarm to determine if the chain is stretching, or your bearing carrier is moving, because the solution depends on the problem.

Do you still have the stock axle locknut? They are always a problem, once you break them loose the first time, they will always come loose. Wrap them both together with electrical tape to keep them from coming loose until you get a new aftermarket locknut.

bad bearings in the carrier could contribute.

my bearings were bad and my chain kept on coming lose. I replaced them and haven't had to tighten my chain once. Its also a brand new chain with a 14t front sprocket, and whatever size the stock 400 comes with. 36-38 I think. Have him replace his bearings and see what happens. Chances are that is his problem.

quick question. My chain keeps coming loose because the swingarm pinch bolts loosen up. How can i keep them from loosening? Thanks

Are the bolts actually loosening, or is the carrier moving even though the bolts are tight?

If the bolts are loosening, I'd try some loctite, the medium strength stuff. The high strength stuff is nearly impossible to get out without damage, but the medium stuff is supposed to disassemble without damage to the components.
