is a louver kit necessary?

on my 250r radiator... i dont have the stock grill or a louver kit...

i plan on racing mx... i can buy a brand new louver kit from my friend for a good price. what would be more important, the stock grill or the louver kit? does the louver kit also serve as a protector for the rad. or does it just direct more air to it?

if i was you id get a grill then when you get more money pick up the louvers
