Depends who you ask. I know guys that have been building and racing different machines for a lifetime that swear by breaking things in hard. I know others who believe the exact opposite. I wish I knew.

Here is an interesting article on this subject.............

go real easy on it for the first 40 minutes then vary it but dont hold it for 40 minutes then just ride normal let cool down in between 40 minute periods you can tel when there broken in because they rev quicker

i kinda broke mine in hard. and it beats a slipon t4 with open airbox with k&n filter in a drag race. but that has more tourque for the hills. but this kid broke his in hard. brought it home started it for the first time and reved it. then waited 2 minutes and went and opened it up. i guess you have to be inbetween.

No idea how the hell but my biek is bone stock with shredders and i inialate other PIPED 400ex's run em stock no problems i mean u gotta ahve after market a's axel shocks and what not but on a 400ex i say keep the engine stock, sure they will go faster but u will never have a problem with a stock engine. I like gettin props from gusy on other 400s that i smoke withy stocker.

Lol sorry i figured id say that cuz... i dont know

Your suppose to take it easy at first, then gradually ride it harder over a few tanks of gas.

see this is where i get scared, i want to get the best i can out of a stock 400ex after the break in but im scared to break something in a different way then the manual says because i know nothing will get messed up that way plus its step by step instructions

Do what the manual says.

You cant hurt an engine by doing it the safe way...

rowlrag broke in his dale at the John Penton gncc last year, no problem yet.

i heard from a guy at a drag strip that you should break in the motor the way you are gonna use it. this coming from a guy that puts major money in his motors, he said the first place his motor is started is the strip.

this kid i know locked up a 2001 1 year old honda xr100. i would break it in like the manual says.

There is a difference between what you guys are saying like ride it f'in hard, and beat the hell out of it like you would race and what mototune says. Mototune is breaking it in with specific things like sealing the rings and putting the engine under a load. NOT BEATING UP THE BIKE. Just ride, vary RPM, gears, and stay under 3/4 throttle for a couple tanks of gas. youll be fine :)

Adjust your throttle stop to 50% and take some easy powerline trails for the first tank, the to 75% and some harder trails for second tank, then after that your good.

why isn't there an in between?

06-28-2003, 05:13 PM
1. idle for 10 minutes

2. let it cool down until the cylinder is warm

3. repeat steps 1 and 2 two more times

4. ride around short shifting, keeping the revs down for a 15 minute period

5. repeat step 2

6. repeat steps 4 and 5 4 more times

7. go through the rest of the tank of gas just putting around, riding it kind of hard, but not revving it to the moon

8. afte rtha first tank of gas is through your ready to rip

Arent u not supposed to idle it? I heard that is bad for new cams. Also if u short shift make sure you dont bog bc that is also bad to do on a new engine.

so basically if u break it in riding alittle more then soft or riding soft, it will be about fully broken in after 1 tank of gas? and will it be broken in after atleast 2 tanks of gas or should u check something?

i agree with quadmx18, and if i had know about mototune i would have followed it. i broke mine in somewhere in-between

if i win the lottery, i will do that test for you; atleast i wont be bias
