Hey gang,

Thinkin about and oversized oil tank for the 400ex. Either UM or CMF. Is one better than the other? If so...why?

Best price and where to get either one of these???

The CFM tank looks like nice quality Can find them on e bay for around 179.99 new from CFM They have no holes or heat shield

The UM used to have holes in them. Now i believe they stopped making them with the holes. They have a heat sheild on the front to prevent the header from heating up the oil.
Those are around 200.00 depending where you go. I have seen them go as low as 150.00 on e bay. The guy at UM told me that he found the holes did not make a huge difference.

Who knows. The one with the best price I would say.

Thanks JD400exrider,

Very informative, I was thinking weather or not I should get one with holes in it.

Interesting...

CFM- Neal makes them with the coolant tubes in them. You have to call and ask him to make it for you. It will cost a little more. The quality of the welds from CFM are way superior than any other oil tank including Pigrys. I bought several CFM products with not one problem. Neal is a great guy also. Give him a call.

Thanks for the info methyman
I would think if the holes would help a little. I have been looking to get one also. Calling Neal on the one with the holes sounds good.
Glamis ABC racing also makes one with holes. He is on this site and shares a shop with FDO.

Wouldn't the cooling tubes take up space and lower the overall capacity of the tank compared to an identical one without the tubes? The tubes would have to more than make up for this in their cooling capability. I guess it's not a huge amount of oil, but then again that doesn't seem like a huge amount of extra cooling. I'd think it would be better to have a finned heat sink on one side and keep the extra oil in there... just htinkin out loud tho... :o

Can you use a PEP stab with any of these 2?

I did, its a little tricky mounting it. You have to raise the steering dampner higher on the steering stem.

You will get some actual cooling from a 4 stroke tech aux oil cooler kit. The oil tanks only add more capacity, so does the oil cooler. It cheaper and a better solution to a heating problem. The holes are a gimmick, but they look cool.
I have taken heat temps from a stock oil cooler and a Pingry, same temp.

I need to see a FST aux cooler mounted ...a close up if anyone has one...

Interesting. Wanted to see if anyone took a temp reading on the two. Was it under the same conditions.

Also anyone running one of the after market oil coolers with a steering stablizer?

It makes sence the after market oil coolers will also hold more oil. So you are adding more than the 1.93 quarts of oil? No overfilling problems ?

yes guys i do make an oversized oil tank for the 400ex.you might be able to see it on the pics of the project quad that ben is putting together.if you can not see it clearly in the pics i can post some if needed.i'm not here to sell parts cause i don't want to overstep my boundrys on this site so if your interested pm me and we can discuss a price.i will cut anyone a deal from this site that is interested.our oil tank comes with the air tubes run through them and i also added a breather to the top of it to help vent some of the heat.i don't have all the bugs worked out of the breather yet so i am selling them with a removable plug in them for now untill all the bugs are out of it.thanks for your time and intrest. yes it was teh same conditions, but stock bore and 440 and both had same oil temps, well I should say both had same surface temp on oil tank. Infra Red sensor.
Yeah you have a oil fill issue, you have to add the first quart, then about 2/3 of the second , then fire it up fpr a quick second, then add the rest. not a big deal.

Is adding oil the only problem people are having with the larger capacity? The increase in oil doesn't effect how the engine runs? or oil pressure? or anything like that? Thanks,

thats how your supposed to fill an oil tank. if ya dont let it idle, you wont get all the oil in it. it needs to run through the engine

Imo the four stroke tech kit is the way to go. It looks like it will cool better, and it dumps oil on your cam where you need it.
