I finally got my quad from the shop. I had JE 416 piston;XR cam;HD valve springs;42 pilot jet and 165 main installed. I also removed the choke. This is what Honda should have made the first time!!! Still have some tuning to do---Feels like a 500cc!!!:D

Yeah, next in line is an FCR carb and WB E-series silencer for me. Now it will pull 5th gear even from low revs!

what compression piston did you put in?

I got the 10.8:1 compression from Marcums atv. I am running Sunoco 100 race fuel. It would prolly be ok with 50/50 though. I like the smell of the 100!! Only $3 a gallon.

i have 10.8:1 and i run sunoco 94... thats the hightest gas octane around here... u can drive like 30 mins and buy some turbo blue i think its 104 but i will only do that for the races...

you can run the highest pump gas on anything under 11:1 compression. Any higher requires a race gas mix.

mikeboone,

what kind of tuning do you have to do? thanks

400ex21. you ever think of buying a 55gal drum of race fuel from VP. i don't have that problem cause i can go get 110 octane about 5 mins. away but i was thinking of buying a drum to put in the trailer if i get to run nationals this year.

Hmm, we've got Turbo Blue here at a station about 2 blocks from my house and it's 110 octane at $3.18/gallon. I love the smell of that stuff, ran it in all my high HP cars. The turbo DSM, my 355'd S-10, my 500 hp 327, my dad's stroker 383. Oops, sorry for the rambling. Those were the days:D

lrd how much does a drum cost???? i really don't need it but it would be nice to have... i could probably buy it at cernics...

guy i think its 104 not really sure mayb it is 110... i never bought it my friend does when he drag raced his street bike... it does smell pretty good... i wonder why i only have 94 octane here... the reason i think why is bc of sheetz... if anyone of u don't know what sheetz is its like shell or sumtin but they have like a store in my town and like 60 stores and he moved into our town and shut down every station but sunoco (we had 6)... sunoco is goin out of business right now 2... sheetz only has 92 octane but he sells gas so cheap he just lowers the price really low and raises it 1 cent at 30 other stores... my gas here is $1.03 at the current moment for 92... its nice but its low octane and my quad can't run on it... i get away with 94...

I ran 104 octane in mine once because we used to have pulling tractors that ran on it and they had msd ignitions.;)

i belive a drum is like 200-250 but you'd have to check at vp's website

The turboblue here used to be 110 octane but now its only a 100. Its been like this for awhile. thats what I have in my little 250ex. I love the way it smells too. and it burns the same scent.
But I have to drive 10 min just to get it. And I think it burns to rich for my jetting anyway. I havent got mine tuned right yet and I think it is because of the turboblue.

I run trick 112, or it may be 110, and its blue and smells good too! We get 50 gallon drums of it, because we run my quad off it and the nova as well.

so is it good to run a high octane even if you havent done nothing to the engine?

All you're doing is wasting your money. There's no benefit of running higher octane fuel if the motor doesn't demand it.

01-14-2002, 11:11 AM
Guy is 110 octane,,,,,,,,I mean 110 percent correct...:D Race gas does nothing for a stock motor,,except make it smell better..:huh

Actually there are some benefits to running race gas in stock type motorcycle/atv engines. 1. Race gas tends to run slightly cooler, you might see a 10 degree reduction on a stock 400EX. 2. Race gas has a slightly higher energy content than "pump gas". Pump gas is formulated to burn leaner and cleaner, the additives and light end molecules give off less energy during their burn. Here in the North East, and many other colder winter areas, extra MTBE or even alcohol is added to reduce emissions during the colder months. These are some of the additives that "water down" the energy content of "straight" gas. You've probably noticed the reduction in MPG of your car in the Winter - that's a big reason why! 3. Although not needed now as much, (since the mfg's. are using hardened and/or coated materials), the lead still does help lubricate and control the wear of valves, valve seats, valve stems etc. I'm in no way trying to say you'll see a huge leap in HP, slight at best (maybe 1 HP on a stock 400EX) but it is measurable, and it won't hurt the longevity.
P.S.>> AvGas is NOT race gas, that's a whole different ball game!
