who makes the best rear skid plate 400ex

I've had a durablue, broke in a month, a PRm lasted the summer and until a month or so ago, and now i'm back to my stock one for racing, haven't been trailing with it at all yet. i'm sure the stock won't last at all the trails.

I'm running a new brand called "Ricochet". I bought direct and got a complete set for $214.04 delivered to my door. After six in-state XC races and Loretta Lynns GNCC there fine, Just scrapes and small dings. The rear skid came with a chain slider in kind of a channel type guide. I found them in the back of Dirt Wheels. My 2 cents.

I have Pro Armor skids, and after this past weekend, I am completely convinced that these are some of the best skids you can buy. I was riding along a trail and ended up coming across a set of old railroad tracks before I knew it and slammed my swingarm skid right into one of them really hard. Much to my amazement, there was only a tiny notch in the skidplate. Had I had my stock skid on there, I'd be needing a new rear brake rotor right now.

These things are tough! I actually have Pro Armor's first skid design that includes three gussets reinforcing the sprocket and rotor guards. After this design, Pro Armor decided to get rid of the gussets, apparently because of complaints that they can hang up on obstacles. They also changed some of the drainage holes and a few other little things. Recently though, I noticed in one of their ads, they showed the new skidplate design, but it had a two gussets added to it. They might not sell it like this though...

Another swingarm skidplate that may be worth looking into is the Pro-Tect stainless steel skid. These are supposed to be extremely durable, however, they are quite expensive.

i bought a ricochet "bullet line" rear skid plate from rocky mountain atv for around $99. it is an awesome plate. it is tough as hell, i would hate to see what it would take to bend this plate. it's about 1/4 inch thick, its put together very well. i like it alot, check them out before buying a skid plate...

Who makes the steel skid plates? (are they stainless, or can you get regular?) How much $ and what do they weigh? How much does an aluminum PRM weigh?

I seriously have to get a new skid plate, and if I can get a steel one that I can re weld, or add steel too etc that would be great depending on weight :D but in the same aspect I could get aluminium welded if need be.

ac, pro armor, and shark racing are probably the best out there. i had a shark racing one on my blaster and it held up well

You can strengthen any swingarm skidplate on a 400ex by reinforcing where it bolts at the rear. Most skid plates just bend around the two points where the rear of the skid bolts. You can drill a flat piece of steel and bolt it between the swingarm and the skidplate to strenthen this area. You will need longer bolts though. You will loose some clearance.
